September 4, 2014

Hyderabad, Sep 4: Shweta Basu Prasad, a Telugu actress, allegedly involved in a prostitution racket, has reportedly told the police that she turned to the flesh trade because no films were coming her way and she had run out of money.

MakdeeThe Task Force sleuths had busted a prostitution racket on August 31 at a hotel in Banjara Hills area, which allegedly involved the actress who had won national award for best child artist in the past.

Balu, an assistant director in Tollywood who acted as her agent, was arrested.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police N Koti Reddy today said during questioning the actress revealed that she got into prostitution as she was not getting film offers any longer, and was financially in dire straits.

A statement attributed to the actress was distributed, where she is reported as saying: "I have made wrong choices in my career, and I was out of money. I had to support my family and some other good causes. All the doors were closed, and some people encouraged me to get into prostitution to earn money. I was helpless, and with no option left to choose, I got involved in this act. I'm not the only one who faced this problem, and there are several other heroines who have gone through this phase."

"The actress is a victim; she has not been arrested. She has been sent to a rescue home, while Balu was arrested under Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act," Reddy said.

A medical test was conducted before she was lodged in a rescue home run by the Woman and Child Welfare department, where she is likely to stay there for three months.

The police claimed that they have also arrested several well-known businessmen along with the actress.

Kolhapur, Feb 21: Voicing against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), renowned lyrics and thinker Javed Akhtar has said that the act was an assault to secularism and integrity of India and with the ongoing protests, the nation had reached a threshold for an another struggle.

Speaking here on Thursday night at an event organised on the 5th death anniversary of CPI senior leader and progressive leader Com Govind Pansare, Mr Akhtar said the newly amended citizenship act was a plot to split the country.

Mr Javed said that communalism has a deep root in India and it spread after the formation of Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League in British India. "Muslim league got Pakistan but Hindu Mahasabha is still unsatisfied," he alleged and added that BJP was now 'working as a branch of RSS' and trying to 'split the country' through NRC.
