National Mobile Number Portablity gets go-ahead

Portable network New Delhi, Jun 14: The highest decision making body in telecom department, Telecom Commission on Friday gave its in-principle approval to full mobile number portability which will allow a mobile subscriber to retain his number even if he moves from one state to another. Now reference will be send to Trai for additional information and clarification.

Last year in September, TRAI in its recommendation sent to the telecom ministry had said that the telecom operators be given six month to implement full mobile number portability. Allowing full mobile number portability was part of the National Telecom Policy-2012.

Currently mobile number portability is restricted within a service area. This means that presently subscribers can only change between operators within a service area. After full mobile number portability gets implement a subscribers will be able to change to another operator in other states also.

It was on December 2012 that telecom department had sought the views of Trai on implementation of full mobile number portability. Consumers have also been using the facility of partial number portability to change operators. The number of subscribers who have successfully ported their mobile number using mobile portability facility has reached 100 million mark.

It was on January 20, 2011 that MNP was launched by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dr Singh had launched the service by making a call to former telecom minister Kapil Sibal from a ported number.

The Commission also approved another infrastructure project for improving phone services in North East states. The TRAI had estimated a project cost of around Rs 2,900 crore. The project will also be placed before the Cabinet for final approval.

India would not discriminate among religions, we are not a theocratic country like Pakistan: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, Jan 22: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said Indian values consider all religions equal, and that is why the country is secular and never became a theocratic state like Pakistan.

Speaking at the NCC Republic Day Camp in Delhi, Singh said: "We (India) said we would not discriminate among religions. Why did we do that? Our neighbouring country has declared that their state has a religion. They have declared themselves a theocratic state. We didn't declare so."

"Even America is a theocratic country. India is not a theocratic country. Why? Because our saints and seers did not just consider the people living within our borders as part of the family, but called everyone living in the world as one family," the minister said.

Singh underlined that India had never declared its religion would be Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist and people of all religions could live here.

"They gave the slogan of 'Vasudev Kutumbakam' -- the whole world is one family. This message has gone to the whole world from here only," he added.

HC asks sexual harassment accused to request victim to tie him ‘rakhi’

Indore, Aug 3: In a bizarre development, the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted bail to an accused in a sexual harassment case on the condition that he will request the victim to tie a ‘rakhi’ on him with a promise to protect her “to the best of his ability for all times to come”.

Justice Rohit Arya on July 30 also ordered the man to pay Rs 11,000 to the complainant as a “customary ritual usually offered by brothers to sisters” on Raksha Bandhan and seek her blessings while visiting her with his wife and a box of sweets. “The applicant shall also tender Rs 5,000 to the son of the complainant for purchase of clothes and sweets,” the order said.

The court directed the accused to take photographs and receipts of payment made to the victim and her son, which should be filed through his lawyer for placing on record of the case before the Registry.

The victim, a resident of Ujjain district, had alleged that her neighbour, Vikram Bagri, entered her house and sexually harassed her on April 20. The police registered a case under Sections 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 354 (A) (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The order said the man, in jail for more than two months, was released on bail, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with “one solvent surety in the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court, on the condition that he shall remain present before the court concerned during trial,” and comply with conditions under Section 437 (3) of CrPC, along with other conditions.

Kerala farmers face issues in selling cucumbers, watermelons amid lockdown

Malappuram, Apr 11: Farmers in Malappuram district are facing problems in selling cucumbers and watermelons due to the drop in demand and prices in the market amid the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.

"We have cultivated cucumbers for our Vishu festival in Kerala. In recent conditions, we are facing issues in selling our crops. In comparison to the previous years, we have a huge production this time," said Saifu, a farmer in the Malappuram district.

"We have also cultivated different kinds of watermelons here. The major issues that we are facing are the low prices and the lockdown," he added.

The nationwide COVID-19 lockdown was imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi form March 25 for 21 days as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Kerala is 364. Till now, 123 people have either been cured or discharged, while two deaths have been reported.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases across the country are 7,529 including 6,634 active cases. So far, 652 patients have either been cured or discharged while 242 deaths have been recorded in the country, as per data provided by the Ministry of Health on Saturday evening.
