Naxal menace remains area of concern: Rajnath

New Delhi, Aug 29: Maoist menace remains an area of concern for the internal security of the country but forces have managed significant improvement over the years, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday.

Addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Naxal menace, Singh said the overall situation this year so far also indicates a declining trend in Maoist incidents compared to corresponding period of 2016. The number of violent incidents has declined by 25.6% during the period.

The Minister said this remains an area of concern for the internal security of the country but the forces exhibited significant improvement over the years and the declining trend continued in the last three years.

Providing figures, he told the meeting that there was a 53% decline in a number of violent incidents and 72% dip in deaths in 2016 compared to 2010. This trend is continuing in 2017, he said.

The MPs who participated in the meeting said the Naxal problem is not just a law and order but also a socio-economic problem. "There is a need for adopting a sustained policy and intelligence sharing in the LWE affected States. They also suggested that police should be further strengthened with the use of better communication and connectivity facilities," an MHA statement said.

Singh informed the meeting that 743 Scheduled Tribes candidates from four most affected LWE districts of Chhattisgarh -- Bijapur, Dantewada, Narayanpur and Sukma -- have been recruited in Bastariya Battalion in order to enhance local representation in the security forces.

The Minister said the Centre has been properly monitoring the situation. The MHA gives necessary assistance to states and empowers them with financial assistance besides giving security forces proper training, technology and latest equipment, he said.

Singh mentioned that the joint operations of paramilitary forces and state police have given good results in the recent past and hoped that the situation will further improve in the near future.

Lucknow, Aug 2: Uttar Pradesh's cabinet minister for Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kamal Rani is the first minister in Uttar Pradesh to die after contracting coronavirus. She was 62.

On 18 July, the minister tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital.

She was later shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the minister's death.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Adityanath said, "Kamal Rani Varun died on Sunday at around 9.30 am. She was an experienced and capable leader. She discharged her responsibilities with competence. She was a dedicated public representative, who was always working for the welfare of deprived and oppressed sections of the society."

Kamal Rani was the MLA from Ghatampur in Kanpur. She was also twice a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Adityanath has cancelled his visit to Ayodhya scheduled for the day, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said on Sunday.

Mar 4: Twenty-one Italian tourists and three Indian tour operators have been sent to an ITBP quarantine facility in Delhi on Tuesday for suspected coronavirus exposure, official sources said.

Health Ministry sources said these foreigners, 13 women and eight men, were in the same group of which an Italian and his wife have tested positive in Rajasthan capital Jaipur.

“His (Italian in Jaipur) condition is stable,” a source said.

Three Indians, who were accompanying this Italian group as tour operators, have also been sent to the ITBP facility in Chhawla area of south-west Delhi, they said.

All these people, staying at a five-star hotel in south Delhi, have been put in “preventive isolation” at the ITBP camp and their samples will be taken on Wednesday, sources said.

The centre already has 112 people, 76 Indians and 36 foreigners, since February 27 after they were evacuated by an IAF plane from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the coronavirus.

The first samples of these 112 people had tested negative when reports came in last week.

New Delhi, Aug 2: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said the Women's IPL or the Challenger series, as it is better known, is "very much on", ending speculation about the parent body not having a plan for Harmanpreet Kaur and her team.

The men's IPL will be held between September 19 and November 8 or 10 (final date yet to be locked in) in the UAE due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in India. The women's IPL will also be fit in to the schedule, according to the BCCI chief.

"I can confirm to you that the women's IPL is very much on and we do have a plan in place for the national team also," Ganguly told PTI ahead of the IPL Governing Council meeting later on Sunday.

The BCCI president, who is awaiting a Supreme Court verdict on waiver of the cooling-off period to continue in the position, did not divulge details but another senior official privy to the development said that women's Challenger will be held during the last phase of IPL like last year.

"The women's Challenger series is likely to be held between November 1-10 and there could be a camp before that," the source said.

The former India captain also said that the centrally contracted women players will have a camp which has been delayed due to the prevailing situation in the country.

"We couldn't have exposed any of our cricketers -- be it male or female to health risk. It would have been dangerous," Ganguly said.

"The NCA also remained shut because of Covid-19. But we have a plan in place and we will have a camp for women, I can tell you that," he added.

The BCCI's cricket operations team is chalking up a schedule where Indian women are likely to have two full-fledged white-ball series against South Africa and the West Indies before playing the ODI World Cup in New Zealand.
