BJP alone has won 12 seats and is leading in 50 others, while its allies AGP and BPF have won three each and are leading in nine each.

Congress' dream to return to power for a record consecutive fourth term was dashed to the ground as it has won just two seats so far and is leading in another 21.

The biggest setback was suffered by AIDUF, the main opposition party in the outgoing assembly, which has so far won in two seats and is leading in 11 seats.

The worst blow to AIUDF was the defeat of its chief Badruddin Ajmal, who was being viewed as a possible king-maker in case of a hung assembly. He was defeated by Congress candidate Wajed Ali Choudhury in South Salmara seat by 16,723 votes.

Outgoing Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was comfortably placed ahead of his BJP rival Kamakhya Prasad Tassa in Titabor Assembly constituency, while BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is ahead of his Congress rival and former minister Rajib Lochan Pegu by 18,923 votes at Majuli(ST).

AGP President Atul Bora has won Bokakhat seat defeating sitting Congress MLA Arun Phukan by 40,193 votes and Congress candidate and former union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar was trounced by Chakradhar Gogoi of BJP by 4,744 votes.

Ministers for social welfare and forest of the outgoing cabinet Gautam Roy and Etuwa Munda are among those who have fallen on the wayside, while their colleagues Sarat Barkotoky, Siddeque Ahmed, Bismita Gogoi, Sumitra Patir, Chandan Sarkar, Ajit Singh, Basanta Das and Girindra Malik are trailing behind their rivals in their respective constituencies.

Rajghat, Feb 23: The maternal uncle of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was recently arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area, police said on Sunday.

Dr Nusratullah Warsi aka Dada (55), a property dealer, was shot dead on Saturday night at about 10:45 pm and an FIR against two people was filed in this connection on a written complaint of his family members.

According to police, it appears to be a case of murder due to monetary and property dispute and they are searching for both the accused.

Dr Kafeel Khan, suspended doctor of Gorakhpur BRD Medical College, was last month arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.

Warsi on Saturday evening had gone to his lawyer Siraj Tariq's house, a few metres away from his own house, and was returning home on foot when a man shot him in his head, killing him on the spot.

"On the written complaint of family members, case of murder against one Imammuddin and Anil Sonkar has been registered and police has initiated probe and is searching for both the accused. Police met the women in their house and is interrogating them," Circle Officer VP Singh said.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of property and money dispute, he said, adding, three teams have been constituted to investigate the case and soon the accused will be caught.

Dr Kafeel Khan had last month raised apprehension in a Mumbai court about being killed in an "encounter" by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been "falsely" implicated in the case by them.

The paediatrician had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was posted.

Thane, Feb 28: Former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta was on Friday charged for allegedly  raping and harassing a woman corporator in Bhayandar, which is in the Thane district near Mumbai, on Friday, police said.

His associate Sanjay Tharthare has also been charged in the case, they said.

The district rural police lodged an FIR against Narendra Mehta, who resigned from the BJP three days ago, and his associate, an official from the Mira-Bhayandar police station said.

No arrest has been made till now.

A video of the corporator purportedly speaking about the alleged harassment and abuse she suffered at the hands of Narendra Mehta went viral on social media two days ago, the official said.

The corporator has alleged that the abuse is going on since 1999 and her family is facing threats from him, he added.

Narendra Mehta and Sanjay Tharthare were charged under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code for rape and other relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, he said.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik demanded the immediate arrest of Narendra Mehta, saying it is a "tragedy" that the BJP, which raises the issue of women's safety in the state, has not taken any action against its leader.

"Law and order issue will arise if such a person (facing rape and harassment charges) roams freely. He should be arrested as soon as possible," Mr Sarnaik said.

The Thane legislator also termed Narendra Mehta as "Marathi-hater" and alleged that he had once questioned Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's culture.

"I wonder why the BJP did not take strict action against Mehta, it needs to introspect," Mr Sarnaik said.
