Need to teach a befitting lesson to disqualified MLAs in bypoll: HDK

Kushalnagar, Nov 21: There is a need to teach a befitting lesson to the disqualified MLAs through byelection results in the state, said former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy.

Speaking to reporters during a private visit to Guggehosur in Somwarpet on Wednesday, he lamented that the anti-defection law has lost its power in a democratic set-up.

“The people who have won after contesting from a particular party, have been switching to another party without any regret as if it is normal,” he pointed out.

Stating that the JD(S) has considered the byelections seriously, the former chief minister said that the party has fielded its best candidates in the 15 Assembly constituencies.

He also alleged that pressure is being mounted on Kabbinakanthi Mutt pontiff Shivalinga Swami to withdraw his nomination from Hirekerur Assembly constituency, as the disqualified MLA contesting from the constituency is afraid of losing.

“The fate of the state government will be decided after the results. JD(S) will win more seats compared to BJP and Congress. People who left our party will have no other choice than to return to the party,” he added.

“The BJP-led state government has completely forgotten the flood victims in various districts of the state. The government’s credibility is questionable as the people affected by floods are compensated with Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, which is a meagre amount keeping in mind the losses incurred by the victims,” said Kumaraswamy.

He criticised Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for allegedly asking his ministers to forget about people’s welfare for 12 days and to focus only on the byelections.

“Why should anyone call him the chief minister when he is not ready to listen to the woes of the people in distress?” asked Kumaraswamy.

Bengaluru, Jan 8: The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the government to submit steps taken in respect of the order of Lokyukta in relation to the Kethaganahalli landgrab case involving former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, his relatives and former minister DC Thammanna.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka gave the direction on a PIL filed by Samaj Parivartan Samudaya (SPS), an NGO. The petitioner said despite an order from the Lokayukta on August 5, 2014, to take action within 15 days, no action has been initiated till date in respect of encroachment of a huge tract of land in Kethaganahalli along Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.

SPS says the land was purchased in 1979 contrary to norms of Karnataka Land Revenue Act. It claims Kumaraswamy and others paid only Rs 5,000 per acre, although the prevailing market rate was Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per acre.

Madikeri, Aug 7: Two days after massive landslides triggered by heavy downpour in Kodagu, five people including a priest are still missing. 

The landslide, which originating at Brahmagiri Hills in Talacauvery, swept away two houses on Wednesday night.

This missing people are: Talacauvery temple chief Narayana Achar (70), his wife Shantha (70), brother Ananda Theertha Swami (87) and two assistants — Ravi Kiran (26) and Srinivas (30). Achar’s neighbour had shifted out of Bhagamandala earlier, fearing a landslide. 

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had to stop rescue operations due to bad weather. The operations resumed today. 

“There are many minor landslides on the way to the spot,” said Kodagu Deputy Commissioner C Annies K Joy, adding that the flood situation at Bhagamandala was not permitting earthmovers to reach the spot. Heavy rain between Wednesday and Thursday triggered landslides. 

Bhagamandala Panchayat Development Officer Ashok said a notice was issued to the priest’s family to shift out of the house, but they chose to stay back. 

On Thursday morning, when the Talacauvery temple staff went to check on Narayana Achar, as he had not reached the temple for the daily puja, they found levelled land and debris where Achar’s house stood. Utensils, puja material and clothes were found nearly 2 km away at Cherangala. 

As rains continued over the last few days, many rivers are flowing above the danger levels, forcing people to move to safer places.

 Responding to the situation, which is turning grimmer by the day, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, directed ministers to visit rain-hit areas and supervise relief efforts. He has also assured of providing required financial assistance for those affected.

Bengaluru, Apr 29: Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday clarified that Department of Telecommunications has extended the relaxed terms and conditions for VPN till July 31.

"Wish to clarify that it is not extension of WFH. In response to IT Industry's request to facilitate WFH for OSPs, Department of Telecommunications, India had relaxed terms and conditions for VPN till April 30 After discussions with IT Ministers this relaxation in terms and conditions is extended till July 31," Prasad Tweeted quoting Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka Dr Ashwath Narayan.

Earlier, the Karnataka government issued a press statement saying that the central government has given permission to IT professionals to work from home till July 31 in the view of COVID-19 pandemic.
