‘Nehru gave us shelter; Modi disowned us’: Hindu Bengalis among those left out of the final NRC list

Newsroom, Sept 3: Among the 19 lakh people who have been left out of the final NRC list in Assam include many Hindu Bengali refugees too. They claim to have come to India from East Pakistan in the 60s, which is well before the NRC cut-off date of 1971. And yet, they didn't make it to the Assam NRC.

One such Hindu Bengali refugee is Shyamapada Chakravarty. He, his wife and their two daughters did not make it to the list. They came to India as a result of “atrocities in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh)” and have lived in India as a Permanent Liability.

Chakravarty says that at the time of their migration, then PM Jawaharlal Nehru invited Hindus from erstwhile East Pakistan and offered them shelter. “All our documents are legitimate. We never expected that we will be considered as intruders under the regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he laments.

Another refuge, Ratna Chakravarty says that she is terrified, especially because she “doesn’t have the money to fight the case for inclusion”. The family is more worried about their children because with their names not being on the list, they believe their children’s future looks bleak.

Dino Krishno Das, another Hindu Bengali refugee, who works as a trader in the weekly market, fell sick as a result of constantly worrying about his future post the exclusion of his name the final list. “I am always thinking about the NRC.” he said.

BJP leader and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that the party will stand by Hindu migrants and will pursue their cases so that they can later extradite the illegal ones. He further added that “technical flaws” may have caused the exclusion of Hindu Bengali refugees and that the state government would move the Supreme Court for a re-verification process.

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar has urged his party colleagues to be active on social media to counter the propaganda of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media persons, the KPCC president said that no more than 20 out of the 68 Congress MLAs are active on social media.

“All those MLAs who are doing well need to be projected. We want leaders, not mere followers. They all should be the face of Congress in Karnataka. Party should not depend on just my face or Siddaramaiah’s,” he said.

Shivakumar’s diktat has resulted in the party’s social media unit scrambling to get leaders to create their accounts.

“We’re pressuring all the party MLAs and leaders. We’re asking their personal assistants or gunmen to operate their accounts if they are not savvy with social media,” KPCC social media chief A N Nataraj Gowda said.

He pointed out that the 20 MLAs who are active on social media include U T Khader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Priyank Kharge, Krishna Byre Gowda among others.

“We’re also trying to get the accounts verified of those who are beginning to get active. For example, it was only recently that we got the accounts of S R Patil and Vijay Singh verified,” Gowda said.

Tapping the full potential of social media is crucial for the Congress because the BJP has found much success in reaching out to voters through various online platforms.

In fact, ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress found that there were 10 ministers and some 40 MLAs who had turned a blind eye towards social media.

Shivakumar said he was also working on putting in place a system in the party under which all developments related to the state and country will be communicated to all party leaders at 10 am every day.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: Schools will remain closed and are expected to be opened in the month of August or September in the view of rising COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, said S Suresh Kumar, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education and Sakala of Karnataka on Tuesday.

Speaking on the issue, Kumar said, "Schools would not open for the time being. The children will be taught through media."

"The state is also working on the new schemes to improve the learning process for the students," he added.

As many as 5,536 new COVID-19 cases and 102 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Tuesday, according to the State Health Department.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 1,07,001 including 64,434 active cases, 40,504 discharges and 2,055 deaths.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: The magisterial enquiry into the police firing during the anti-CAA protest on December 19 in Mangaluru, has been postponed following the lockdown of Dakshina Kannada district, Udupi DC G Jagadeesh announced on Monday.

The inquiry by Udupi DC G Jagadeesh was scheduled on Monday. Already, City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha and others have deposed before the magistrate. The Deputy Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioner were supposed to appear before the magistrate.

Following the December 19 violence and the death of  Nausheen and Jaleel due to alleged police firing, the state government had commissioned two probes-- one magisterial and the other, a CID inquiry.

 As per the government order, a report on the inquiry was to be submitted before March 23. On the request by the magistrate for more time since the documents and videos had to be examined, the government had asked him to submit the report by April 23.
