New K'taka bypoll schedule: Venugopal says EC acting like 'yet another govt dept'

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal on Friday alleged that the Election Commission was acting like "yet another government department" and said the new schedule for the Karnataka bypolls have been made to "facilitate the purification" of disqualified legislators.

According to a notification issued by the Election Commission on Friday, bypolls to 15 Karnataka Assembly seats, which the poll panel had decided to defer, will be held on December 5. Citing proceedings in the Supreme Court on Thursday regarding the pleas filed by 17 disqualified MLAs of the state challenging their disqualification, the EC said that after deliberations, it has decided that the nomination process will restart on November 11 as per the new schedule.

Following the EC decision, Venugopal tweeted, "The Election Commission now acts like yet another government department. Postponing elections after starting the proceedings is quite unusual. The new schedule also seems to have been made to facilitate the purification of the disqualified MLAs."

The apex court will hear the matter next on October 22 and has expressed its inclination to decide the issue. In July, then Karnataka Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar had disqualified 17 MLAs -- 13 belonging to the Congress, three JD(S) and one Independent -- which eventually led to the fall of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government.

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Complaints have been registered after it came to light that the conditional permission to enter the Dakshina Kannada district for non-COVID-19 patients from Kerala has been misused on two occasions.

Police said on Friday that the Patients are allowed into the district after filling an online form and getting it authorised from the medical officer from Kasargod district hospital.

On April 9, a patient had arrvived at the district hospital complaining of head ache. After preliminary check up by the physician he left in an ambulance that had arrived from Kasargod earlier carrying another patient without informing the physician.

Mangaluru, Apr 29: One person was arrested on charges of murdering a middle-aged couple on Wednesday in Yellinje near Kinnigoli.

The area falls under the jurisdiction of Mulky police.

Police said that the deceased were identified as Vincent D’Souza (50) and his wife Helina D’ Souza (45).

The arrested was identified as Alphonso (55). He will be sent to judicial custody, said police.

Madikeri, Jan 17: Kannada and Telugu actor Rashmika Mandanna is likely to be further interrogated by Income Tax (I-T) officials on Friday.

The residence and properties by the family of Rashmika were raided by I-T officials on Thursday morning. Following summons issued by I-T officials, Rashmika rushed to her residence on Thursday night and gave details on investments and other financial transactions.

After the interrogation, the I-T officials left for Serenity hall, which is owned by Rashmika's father, at Virajpet at around 2.30 am and stayed back there.

The I-T officials have reportedly directed Rashmika and her father Madan Mandanna not to leave the house.
