Mangaluru, Oct 4: the New Mangalore Port during the first half of the fiscal year 2017-18 handled 19.54 million tonnes of cargo as against 17.49 million tonnes handled in the corresponding period of last year and thereby registered 11.72% growth.
Increase in the handling of coal, iron ore for KIOCL, LPG, cement, etc. has contributed to the above growth in traffic. The port has also achieved 14.76% growth in container traffic by handling 50,696 TEUs in Hy1 of 2017-18 as against 44, 176 TEUs handled in the Hy1 of 2016-17.
With this trend, the port is expected to cross 40 million tonnes mark by the end of the current financial year.
Suresh P Shirwadkar, chairman in-charge while recalling the sincere support and co-operation extended by the officers, staff, workers, trade union leaders, trustees and the port users for the overall development of New Mangalore Port, has appealed for their continued cooperation for achieving more laurels.
