New Mangalore Port rescues Filipino crew of Iran-bound ship

Mangaluru, Jul 23: The authorities of the New Mangalore Port helped a Filipino crew member of a ship who suffered from severe abdominal pain.Sri Julious Clivete

NMP authorities stated that they had received a "distress message / medical assistance required" from master of MT Kriti Sfakia through their local agents on Sunday at 10.45am.

The vessel was enroute to Iran and coming from Singapore. According to the Master, there was a medical emergency for a Filipino crew member Julious Clivete, 45, who suffered from severe abdominal pain in lower right side.

The Vessel authorities suspected a case of appendicitis. The Master also informed that ship would reach New Mangalore Port limit after 3pm.

The Port authorities responded to the distress call and arranged Port Pilot for medical evacuation inside the basin.

Patient was successfully evacuated using Port craft at 5.12pm on and the crew was hospitalized at A.J. Hospital here through their steamer agent Interocean Shipping Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru, for treatment.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Udupi, Mar 8: The 75-year old man who was admitted to Udupi District Hospital over suspected Corona Virus infection has tested negative on Saturday.

The reports from Bengaluru Medical College’s laboratory where the samples of the person were sent, confirmed that the aged person was not infected with Corona Virus.

The report was submitted to the District Administration by the laboratory that confirmed that the person was not infected by the viral Corona Virus.

Mangaluru, Aug 1: Former member of Karnataka Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. 

The Congress leader took to social media to break the news. “I and my wife Dr Kavitha have been tested positive covid-19 positive. There are no symptoms. We had voluntarily given our throat swabs for testing,” he said in a Facebook post.

He also requested his friends and well-wishers not to visit him until he recovers. 

Mr D’Souza had participated in a party meeting at Congress Bhavan when KPCC chief DK Shivakumar visited city yesterday. He was seen meeting several Congress leaders including U T Khader.
