Journalists threaten to boycott programmes post-police 'misbehaviour'; CM apologises

Mangalore, August 23: In an unforeseen development, journalists of Mangalore threatened to boycott all the programmes of Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa in the city, after the police misbehaved with them at the Airport on Monday morning, August 23.


Yeddyurappa landed at the Mangalore Airport at around 8:30 am and spoke to mediapersons for a couple of minutes and got into a Volvo bus followed by a galaxy of local ministers and MLAs.

When journalists decided to follow the CM's vehicle, two police constables stopped their vehicle and said that they had received order from higher authorities to do so. They said that they cannot allow any vehicle for 10 minutes.

Irked by this, journalists took a decision to boycott the programmes to be attended by the Chief of the state in the city.

However, Yeddyurappa later addressed mediapersons at Circuit House and apologized himself, for the incident. He ordered the suspension of Shyam Sunder, Bajpe SI, for misbehaving with the representatives of the press. However, mediapersons requested the CM not to take as harsh an action as suspension, and urged him to make sure that he took note of the incident and see to it that it doesn't happen in the future. The CM then withdrew his suspension announcement and ordered that the officer be temporarily relieved of his duties. He also warned Seemanth Kumar Singh, Mangalore Police Commissioner, to take care of his subordinates and stated that by merely sporting Khakhi, one does not get entitled to misbehave or assault others.

Due to the incident, the CM's move to travel in a Volvo bus in order to avert the traffic jam throughout his city journey, had taken a strange turn. Mediapersons of the city had stood firm with an adamant demand that the CM, who had left the airport by Volvo allegedly ordering the authorities to allow the press vehicle to move forward only after 10 minutes, had demanded that he should come back to the same spot and allow them to follow him, if he wants coverage for all his programmes across the city.


Stunned by the firm decision of undivided mediapersons of Mangalore, MLC Ganesh Karnik, who was also among those escorting the CM, rushed back to the Airport where mediapersons had gathered, apologized, and requested them to follow the CM. The efforts of DCP Ramesh and Panambur Police Inspector Valentine D'Souza who also rushed to the spot to convince the media persons, had turned futile too.

Besides, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj and City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh too had requested the media persons to forget the issue. After a long discussion, Journalists under leadership of Ramakrishna, Vice President of District Working Journalists Association, DK, agreed to meet the CM at Circuit House.

Bengaluru, May 4: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that the health of the migrants who have been allowed to move, should not be jeopardized and appropriate tests must be conducted.

"The task was to send the workers to their places. However, their health should not be jeopardized. This decision made for their benefit should not be a travesty for them. There will also be physical interference on the buses and appropriate tests must be done," said Kumaraswamy.

"The lockdown, which was implemented without any prerequisites, is now loosened without warning. The state government, which has allowed migrant workers to move to the city, has mobilized large numbers of people. By this, the government is playing with their health," he added.

He continued saying that the government should not lose out on an unscientific move that resulted in the loss of thousands of crores of rupees from a custodial lockdown.

"Workers and villages must be sober. The government must take all necessary precautions in this regard," he added.

Mangaluru, June 28: Three fresh deaths in last 24 hours have taken the total number of covid-19 deaths in Dakshina Kannada district to 13.

While a 31-year-old youth from Idya in Surathkal and a 57-year-old woman from Bantwal passed away last night, a 52-year-old woman from Jokatte breathed her last today. 

The youth from Suratkal breathed his last in Wenlok. The woman from Bantwal’s Loretto Padav village was unwell for last 1 year. She was tested positive three days ago and passed away at a private hospital. 

The woman from Jokatte was reportedly suffering from tuberculosis. On June 26, she was admitted to a private hospital in the city, where she was tested coronavirus positive.

As per the district health bulletin on Saturday June 27 evening, a total of 12,919 samples have been sent for tests till date, out of which 12,198 have turned out negative, and 576 positive, including 10 persons from other districts. 

Out of these, 148 are currently active. As many as 416 persons have recovered and been discharged.

Mangaluru, Jun 7: The Sri Krishna temple at Udupi would not re-open on June 8 although permission has been given to all temples to allow devotees for darshan, Admaru mutt junior seer Paryaya Swami Ishapriya Teertha said on Saturday. He told reporters in Udupi that the mutt has decided not to allow devotees at present to join the fight against COVID-19 by the government, health department and the police.

The seer said the situation would be assessed in the next 20-30 days after which a decision to re-open the place of worship would be taken.

The health of the devotees and the staff at the mutt and temple would have to be protected.

However, pujas and rituals would continue to be held at the temple, he said.

Meanwhile, Dharmasthala dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade said in a press release that the Lord Manjunatheshwara temple in Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district would open for devotees from June 8. He said 800-1,000 devotees would be allowed to have darshan at the temple every day, keeping with the regulations of the government.

Mass-feeding (annadhanam) in the Annapoorna hall would also be organised, maintaining social distance in view of the virus spread.
