Bhatkal, September 6: A nine-year-old boy and his father (39) were killed in a blast inside their home in Sodigadde-Banasale in Belke Gram Panchayat limits in Bhatkal taluk on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Karthik Ramesh Naik and his father, Ramesh Mastappa Naik.

The blast took place when the bombs went off accidentally. It has been alleged that explosive materials were being manufactured while the incident took place. However, the reason behind the blast is yet to be ascertained.

According to another source, the duo were preparing a sulphur mixture for a crude bomb to scare away pigs. However, it is yet to be ascertained if pigs are found around the area.

Immediately after the incident the father and son were taken to the Government hospital, where the doctor declared Karthik as brought dead, while Ramesh Naik, who was seriously injured, was directed to be sent to Manipal immediately after he was given first aid treatment at the Government hospital. Unfortunately, Ramesh succumbed to his injuries enroute to the hospital in Manipal. The post mortem of both the deceased will be conducted at a hospital in Manipal.

Speaking to reporters about the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dr CB Vedamurty confirmed that it was a crude bomb blast and the bomb detection squad have been summoned to ascertain the exact reason behind the blast.

He said that the police searched Mr. Naik's house but they did not find any clues. But Bhatkal rural police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, concerns have mounted following Sunday's blast as this was the second such case within a week and people are demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.

Few days ago, a woman was injured in a suspected explosion, which was reported to have occurred in another house in Muglihonda in Bhatkal.

“Police should find out why these bombs were being made,” said a concerned bystander near the blast site.

Police are also looking at the possibility of a link between the growing illegal activities in the town and the two blasts.
