Mangalore air crash: It was indeed pilot error

Mangalore, November 17: It is now final : it was pilot error which resulted in the horrific crash of flight IX 812 on May 22 this year, killing 158 passengers arriving from Dubai while landing at the table top airport in Mangalore.

Sources in the DGCA, privy to the final report on the investigation into the crash, said the pilot of the ill-fated flight, Zlatko Glusica, had been groggy from his 90 minute on-flight slumber, when he attempted to land the Air India IX 812737-800 on that fateful day.

The sources in Air India also confirmed that the final report has been indeed released but the DGCA had the first copy of it.

Sources said the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) recorded intermittent snoring of the pilot who was in deep sleep.

This recording was decoded by the American National Transport Board which stated that "this was the first instance of recording of snoring by a pilot on flight".

The pilot had woken up few minutes before the aircraft had entered Indian EEZ over Arabian Sea (200 kilometers from Bajpe airport).

The aircraft overshot the runway and crashed into the ravines beyond its perimeter.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 10: At least 15 RSS activists protesting against the 16th Chikkamagaluru District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Sringeri were detained, Police said here on Friday.

The Sangh Parivar activists gathered near the entrance of the hall where the event was being held and started sloganeering against the election of the leftist Kalkuli Vittal Hegde as the president of the literary gathering. The police then interfered and detained several protesters to bring situation under control.

Despite protests from the right wing organisations, the event went ahead and began as per the schedule.

Udupi, Jan 25: The accused, who planted a crude bomb at the Mangalore International Airport on January 20, was brought to Udupi on Saturday, to collect information, as part of the spot investigation, police said here.

According to police officials, accused Aditya Rao was brought to Karnataka Bank Kadiyali branch, where Rao had a Safe Locker. The team opened the locker and seized the documents, along with a Box.

They said the seized documents, along with the Box, will be sent to the FSL for investigation.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.
