Mangalore, December 19: Curtains came down on the 25-day long first World Konkani Cultural Convention on Sunday with veteran political leader L K Advani urging the Konkani speaking community to be proud of their mother tongue and its rich culture.

Addressing thousands of people gathered to witness the grand valedictory ceremony of the unprecedented Konkani cultural gala at Nehru Maidan, here, the former deputy PM whole heartedly appreciated the efforts of Mandd Sobhann, world's premier Konkani cultural organisation, which organised the event.

Advani, who turned nostalgic while laying emphasis on the importance of mother tongue, recalling his childhood days in Pakistan, where he was born and brought up before migrating to India, said that he studied Ramayana and Mahabharata for the first time in Sindhi, which is his mother tongue. He said that he cannot forget his days in St Patrick High School in Karachi till the end of his life.

At the same time, he said that it is good to learn as many languages as possible and especially stressed to master English, the language of global communication.

Elaborating the difference between “English language” and “English mentality”, he called upon the people of all Indian communities to learn English language (Angrezi) but not become slaves of English mentality (Angreziyath).

Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, showering his praises on the Konkani community, their culture and language, said that his government is committed to protect and promote Konkani interests.

He termed Konkani, which is spoken by all major religious communities of India including Christians, Hindus and Muslims, a truly “secular language”.

Responding to a demand put forward by the organisers of the event to take appropriate steps to withdraw cases filed against Christians during the period of series of Church attacks in Mangalore in 2008, CM said judicial probe is underway in this regard.

In a positive response to another special demand of the organisers, Yeddyurappa said he would announce financial aid to them, once the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat polls are over.

Rev Sr Wilberta BS, Superior General of Bethany Congregation, Prof Wilfred Prakash D'Souza Prabhu, Historian and Researcher and Walter Nandalike, MD, Daiji Media Pvt Ltd were guests of honour.

Entrepreneur Ronald Colaco was honoured on the occasion with the title of “Vishwa Konkani Samaj Rantna.”

Lois J Pinto, President of Mandd Sobhann and Eric Ozario, Gurkaar of Mandd Sobhann were among those present.
