Mangalore, December 21: Similar and continuous threat calls from both local communal elements and underworld dons to a popular city based advocate are exposing the possible nexus between underworld and communal parties.

Advocate Dinesh Hegde Ulepady told “Coastaldigest.com” that he has been receiving several threat calls since Saturday, December 18, from an underworld gang headed by Ravi Poojary and a local group controlled by communal elements.

He said that both are similar groups and threats received from both sides are similar and against the constitution of India.

“The underworld gang headed by Ravi Poojary is 'a self declared pro Hindu force' and the local communal elements like RSS and Bajarang Dal are also 'self declared saviours of Hinduism'. Both work in the name of 'Hindu Dharm' and now both are threatening me in a similar way and simultaneously,” Ulepady said.

As a professional lawyer, Ulepady has taken up many criminal cases including sensitive cases of Madur Isubu and Kamalaksha Purusha, who was recently arrested by the police on the charges of killing a three and half year old child at Yeyyadi.

On Saturday, at around 3:30 pm, Advocate Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, received a threat call from an international telephone number claimed to be the aid of Ravi Poojary. “The strange voice demanded me to drop the case of Madur Isubu, who was arrested by Dakshina Kannada police earlier this month. The caller also threatened me that if I failed to withdraw the case, I would face a similar consequence of Naushad Kashimji, who was brutally murdered in April 2009,” said Ulepady.

He said that later he received another threat call from a local, who claimed to be a Hindu leader, asking him not to fight for Kamalaksha Purusha and to withdraw the case within two days.

“After these calls, I received many calls from same number but I did not pick them,” he said.

Ulepady said that though he had filed two separate complaints in Barke and Bunder Police Stations on December 18 and 19 respectively, he has not got any security from the police department so far.

“They have given protection to communal advocates without any reason and are asking me to ignore the threat calls. How can I ignore a threat call from an underworld gang, while the picture of Advocate Kashimji's murder is still fresh in my memory?” he questioned.

The advocate said that they are not threatening him out of their concern towards the victim's family in child murder case. Pointing out the double standard policy of communal forces, he questioned as to why they are not threatening another advocate, (who has a close association with communal groups) who is arguing on behalf of Madhava, another accused in the child murder case?

Ulepady also said that the local communal groups went on to the extent of threatening his father-in-law to face dire consequences, if he did not persuade his son in law to withdraw from the above cases.

Will never stoop!

Ulepady clarified that he would not stoop or yield to any pressure from anybody and will continue pursuing his duty. “As a lawer, I have the right to fight for my client. Nobody can dictate which case I should take and which I should drop. I am not ready to consult any organisation or communal elements before taking up any case,” he said.

Contempt of Court

He also said that he will also wage a legal battle against those who threatened him and are violating his constitutional rights. “Threatening a lawyer to drop any case is not only a crime but comes under “contempt of court” as well. I will file a petition in this regard in the concerned court,” said the advocate.

PUCL backs Advocate

Meanwhile, People's Union for Civil Liberties has considered the life threat against Ulepady a serious issue.

An official release issued by the PUCL stated that the popular advocate has been receiving life threats from underworld mafia which is supporting Sangh Parivar, just because he has accepted the brief of Madur Isubu, against whom certain criminal cases have been filed by the police.

“Professional ethics of advocates do not give them the liberty to refuse a brief from any client, and the Government provides an advocate as and when an accused cannot afford to engage a lawyer”, the release said.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: India has registered the first confirmed case of death due to novel coronavirus. A 76-year-old man from Karnataka's Kalaburgi who passed away recently has been tested positive for Covid-19.

The doctors had suspected that the man had coronavirus, however, the test had not confirmed it.

In an official notification, a senior health official in Karnataka government Dr Suresh Shastri said that the lab test has confirmed that the deceased man had Covid-19.

"The 76-year-old man from Kalburgi who passed away and was a suspected COVID 19 patient has been confirmed for COVID 19. The necessary contact tracing, isolation and other measures as per protocol are being carried out. Telangana government has also been informed since he went to a private hospital there," Dr Suresh Shastri said.

The same information was also shared by Karnataka health minister B Sriramulu.

A senior Union health ministry official said in New Delhi that the death of the man had visited Saudi Arabia from January 29 to February 29. The official said the man had reached in Hyderabad on February 29 and went to Kalaburagi in Karnataka.

State Joint Director (Communicable Diseases) BG Prakash Kumar said all protocols were followed for disposal of the body.

"The body is disinfected completely and disposed of as per the Government of India guidelines," he added when asked to elaborate on the protocols.

He said the Telangana government has also been informed as the man had gone to a private hospital in Hyderabad earlier.

While announcing the death of the man on Tuesday, the state authorities had said the exact cause his death was being ascertained.

According to the Union health ministry official, "While he was asymptomatic on his return (from Saudi Arabia), he developed symptoms of fever and cough on 6th March. One private doctor visited him at his home and treated him there."

"On 9th March, the symptoms got aggravated and he was shifted to a private hospital in Kalaburagi. In this private hospital, he was provisionally diagnosed as 'mid-zone viral pneumonia' and 'suspected Covid-19'," the official said.

"The sample was collected on March 9... Without waiting for the test results, the attendees insisted and the patient was discharged against medical advice and the attendees took him to a private hospital in Hyderabad," the official said.

The patient was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad and treated. He died on Tuesday when he was being brought back to the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Kalaburagi.

Apart from the deceased, Karnataka has confirmed five other positive cases of the novel coronavirus. The fifth case, confirmed on Thursday is of a 26-year-old man who recently returned from Greece.

The patient has been admitted and isolated at a hospital and his condition is stable, a department media bulletin said.

The day also saw the education department declaring summer holidays for students from kindergarten to class six and study leave for higher classes in the city as a precautionary measure.

Mysuru, Mar 18: Even though the migration season is coming to end and the winged visitors are set to fly back, the water bodies where most birds nest and breed are under close surveillance with the report about spread of bird flu in Mysuru as unusual death of birds can be a cause for worry and hence the authorities are on high alert.

At Karanji Lake, the birds are watched in detail twice – morning and evening. If any sick bird or dead bird is noticed, the Zoo Vets are alerted. So far, no such birds had been sighted. The surveillance data is maintained every day. Intensive surveillance and passive surveillance is done.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) Member Secretary B P Ravi said the birds are doing well and there is no cause for worry with their health monitored constantly along with tests on the bird droppings done every month at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.

Newsroom, Jan 24: BJP leader and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje has been booked by Kerala police over a misleading and communally provocative social media post.

Karandlaje had tweeted that that Hindus from a colony in Kuttipuram in Malappuram district were denied water supply as they supported the the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"Kerala is taking baby steps to become another Kashmir. Hindus of Kuttipuram Panchayat of Malappuram was denied water supply as they supported #CAA2019. #SevaBharati has been supplying water ever since. Will Lutyens telecast this intolerance of PEACEFULS frm God's Own Country!?," she tweeted.

A case has been booked under section 153(A) of IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc). Karandlaje took to Twitter to slam the Kerala government, and said it had lodged a complaint against her instead of acting against the discrimination faced by dalit families of Cherukunnu.

"It is high time the society unites against these pressure tactics of a non-performing, biased left government," she said.

Karandlaje claimed that the CAA had been accepted by both houses of Parliament and people supporting the Act were facing boycott in business and were being denied basic amenities and jobs. "The CPI(M) government is blind to all these incidents across Kerala, but files a case against me for speaking the truth!" she retorted.

According to reportage from multiple outlets, the colony in Malappuram district's Kuttippuram was dependent on a private individual for water; then came accusations that they were denied the water for attending BJP's pro-CAA rally.

A resident of the colony was quoted by a newspaper, “We were denied drinking water because our husbands participated in a meeting organised to gather support for the CAA. Some people told the family that they should not give drinking water to us because CAA is a threat to the people in their community.”

However, the individual in question denied the accusation, claiming a lack of water because of technical issues.

The case was registered after a complaint by lawyer Subhash Chandran, a resident of Malappuram. Aravindan E.A., SI of Kuttippuram police, said, "From a private person's borewell, water was being provided to the people of the colony. This motor had taken for agricultural work and he was recently issued a warning by State Electricity Board. He was told that if he uses the motor for any other purpose, power supply would be disconnected. He then had stopped using the pump following the crisis worsened.”
