Ullal Darga president accused of corruption, misuse of power

Mangalore, January 21: In a new development, the vice-president of Sayyid Mohammed Shareeful Madani Darga and Juma Masjid, Ullal has tendered his resignation from the post protesting the alleged misuse of power and dictatorship by the Darga Committee President UK Monu.

In his resignation letter addressed to the President UK Monu and other members of the Darga Committee, Abdul Rasheed, who was serving as vice-president of the same Committee since last five years, accused the President of violating the bylaws of the Committee, which was supposed to be dissolved already after completing its five year tenure.

“As per the bylaw, the tenure of the Committee is five years, which is already passed. The President has not only failed to dissolve and arrange general body meeting to pave the way for electing a fresh Committee, but also unleashing dictatorship,” he said.

He also accused the President of tarnishing the image of Darga by his misdeeds and massive corruptions.

Mr Rasheed urged all the members of the Darga Committee to take immediate measures to sack the President and set up an inquiry to calculate the losses caused by him to the Committee.

Manglauru: Muslim orgs to hold awareness meet against CAA, NRC on Jan 15

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, has finally received green signal from the city police to hold an awareness meet against CAA, NRC and NPR on January 15, but on the outskirts of the city.

The Committee, which is a kind of umbrella body of Muslim organisations of the two coastal districts, had twice cancelled its planned protest against the same at Nehru Maidan, in the heart of the city due to permission denial by the city police.

Addressing a press conference here today, Committee chairman, KS Mohammed Masood said that event will be held at Shaha Garden near Central Juma Masjid at Adyar Kannur.

He said that the representatives from the 28 different organisations unanimously finalised the date and venue after a consultations as the police refused to grant permission to hold the event at Nehru Maidan or Town Hall.

Representatives of various organisations including S M Rasheed Haji, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Rafeeuddin Kudroli and Abdul Rasheed Zaini were present at the press meet.

Just a paddy field runner: Buffalo racer Gowda's modest response about comparison to Usain Bolt

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Yenepoya Hospital becomes first private hospital in DK to get nod for COVID-19 tests

Mangaluru, May 10: The Yenepoya Medical College Hospital at Deralakatte here has become the first private hospital in Dakshina Kannada district to get coronavirus (COVID-19) testing approval.

The laboratory at the hospital has received the nod from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to conduct tests for COVID-19, a release here said.

Dakshina Kannada will now have two centres for coronavirus tests, the first one being the district Wenlock hospital, the designated hospital for Covid-19.

ICMR has approved 33 testing centres in the state of which 21 are government hospitals and 12 are private hospitals.
