M'lore: Foundation stone for new Lokayukta office laid

January 31, 2011

Mangalore, January 31: The state government should fulfill its promise of giving greater freedom and power to Lokayukta to accomplish various tasks, said Lok Ayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde.

He was speaking after laying foundation stone for the proposed new office building for the Dakshina Kannada division of Karnataka Lokayukta near Zilla Panchayat here on Monday.

He said it is impossible for the Lokayukta to function smoothly if there was no specific office or privacy for it at any level.

Hegde said that the cooperation from the side of public and district administration is very much necessary for the better functioning of an institution like Lokayukta at the district level.

While welcoming the government's move to build a new office building for the corruption watch dog in the district, Hegde, also recalled the earlier assurance of the government that a new office will be provided for Lokayukta in the premises of the office of Deputy Commissioner.

“Anyhow, today we laid the foundation stone for the dream building in Urva store, which is far from the DC office. If the Lokayukta office is established near government offices, government workers would naturally keep themselves away from the corruption,” he opined.

Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat, Chairman of Coastal Development Authority B Nagaraj Shetty, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P Shivashankar were present.

Hassan, Feb 9: Accusing the Centre for treating Karnataka as its enemy Former Minister and Congress leader UT Khader on Saturday said that the state did not get support from the Centre on the Mahadayi issue and flood relief and even the Union Budget.

Speaking to the media here, he said that the state has elected 25 BJP Lok Sabha members. Three from the state were Ministers in the Union Cabinet and another MP has been appointed president of the party’s state unit.

'None of them have spoken about the injustice done to the state in the budget. The budget document announced Rs 18,600 crore for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. But, ultimately the amount earmarked for the project is only Rs 1 crore. How can any BJP leader justify this?', the Congress leader wondered.
