Somasekhara Commission didn't give clean chit to saffron groups'

January 31, 2011

Mangalore, January 31: Although Justice Somasekhara Commission report on attacks on places of worships in the state is apparently biased and prepared in the interest of the ruling government, no one should forget that it clearly mentioned that Bajarang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishath have directly involved in attack against around ten Christian centres, pointed out Advocate MP Noronha.

He unearthed many contradictions of the final report of the panel report at a debate organised by the Journalists Study Centre at Sahodaya Hall here on Monday.

The other debaters were Mahendra Kumar, the main accused in the Church attack case, VHP leader Jagadish Shenava, who is also the lawyer for Bajarang Dal in the Church Attack case, and Sharan Pampwell, DK district convenor of Bajaranga Dal.

Norohna also said that the final report never gave clean chit to the saffron outfits like Bajaranga Dal and VHP, but evaded from recommending any legal action against such groups.

He observed that political pressure seems to be the main reason for the contradictions between the interim report, which held the state government and saffron outfits responsible for the attacks, and final report, which tried to protect the ruling party and its backers in the state.

Mahendra Kumar, who was the State Convenor of Bajarang Dal during the attack against Christian religious centres, termed them as “attack against the centres of conversion,” saying that propaganda made by some Christian groups naturally provoked Hindus. He said that booklets like 'Satya-Darshini', which unleashed hatred against Hinduism resulted in the attacks.

Terming the panel report as a source of confusion and extravagant delivery, Mahendra Kumar said one need not to give importance to this report as this cannot be equivalent to a verdict.

“Somasekhara took nearly two and a half years, wasting over Rs 2.5 crore to prepare a lot of confusion,” he said.

Brushing aside the allegation that 'Satya-Darshini' led to the attack, Noronha said that the booklet was found in Dakshina Kannada at the end of 2009, i.e., more than a year after the attack.

While sticking to his stand that the attitude of some Christian groups provoked the Hindus, Mahendra declined to answer a question that whether Sangh Parivar or Bajarang Dal had directly involved in the attack, saying “Now I am not in the Sangh Parivar”

He also accused the state government of making him the scapegoat and misusing 'Hindutva' for political reasons. “There is a clear line between political Hindutva and honest Hindutva and I prefer latter to former, while BJP has shamelessly chosen the former,” Mahendra Kumar said.

He also accused the BJP of misusing the activists of honest Hindutva to achieve their selfish ends.

Sharan Pumpwell said that the Bajarang Dal does not indulge in any anti-constitutional activities and works for the interest of Hindu society under the guidance of VHP and RSS. He said that all the allegations made against his organisation and other Hindu outfits were baseless as far as Church attacks are concerned.

Dubbing the attacks as tit for tat, he said because of the Christian missionaries many families had been“ruined” in the Hindu society. To elaborate on the word “ruin”, he gave an example that age-old parents of a Hindu family had converted to Christianity, while their children are still practicing Hinduism. “Those who were attacked by the Christians, naturally responded to it in the form of attack against the centres of conversion” he added.

JSC President Praveen Padigar chaired the meeting.

Mangaluru, May 9: A team of doctors at Mangaluru's Mangala Hospital has developed a 'bubble helmet' that will provide an alternative to patients who need an oxygen mask.

The team was led by Dr Ganapathi, medical director of Mangala Hospital and Mangala Kidney Foundation in the city.

The bubble helmet, which has a special collar attached to it, helps the patients with breathing issues, and to avoid using ventilator facility.

Dr Ganapathi said, "When a patient needs intubation we will be providing them oxygen bubble helmets and we will first give it a trial before we intubate a patient."

"I have converted an ordinary snorkelling mask into a ventilator assist device, this mask can be used as a personal protection device by connecting it to a bacterial viral filter," he added.

Dr Ganapathi said that the connector has been made available in India and a snorkelling mask can be easily converted into a ventilator assist device. And it will make the management of coronavirus patients easy.

Wayanad/Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: Amid the strict lockdown, a school teacher travelled from Thiruvananthapuram to Muthanga in Wayanad -- a distance of about 465 km -- on her way to neighbouring Karnataka en route to Delhi following which cases have been registered against her and an excise official.

The woman, Kamna Sharma, said to be working in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, undertook the journey on April 21 along with her two year-old daughter, police sources told news agency PTI.

An Excise Circle Inspector, Shahjahan, had provided his vehicle to travel allegedly on the instructions of Malappuram excise officer, in whose private vehicle, the woman and the child had reached Wayanad border from Thiruvananthapuram, the sources said.

The two were charged under the Kerala Epidemic Act and various sections of the IPC including sect 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection) and 271 (disobedience to quarantine rule).

Because of the lockdown even inter-district travel is not allowed by police and district administration, unless there is an extremely genuine reason.

A senior police official in Thiruvananthapuram said he does not remember issuing any such pass.

The woman may have "misused" government machinery as private vehicles would have been stopped somewhere during the long journey, he said.

She came to Kalpetta in Wayanad allegedly in an official car of the excise department.

Wayanad District police chief R Elango said that an FIR has been filed based on preliminary information and investigations have begun.

"We will check if she has followed procedures in obtaining a pass and if she made any false claim to get the pass."

As per preliminary information the woman came in an excise official's car from Thamarassery (Kozhikode) to Muthunga(Wayanad), he said. Her mode of transport before that--from Thiruvananthapuram to Wayanad--will also be investigated, he said, adding they have no information if she has reached Delhi.

"We will track down her movement," he said Meanwhile, theWayanad district administration has intensified the lockdown protocol from Thursday to prevent people's movement within and from outside the district/state.

Interception at all the check posts on district an state borders of the district, bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, will also be intensified. No one would be allowed to travel frequently to and fro the district under the pretext of official duty.

Wayanad collector Adhila Abdulla said officials from outside the district will no longer be allowed to commute daily.

"Elderly people above the age of 65 should confine to their homes unless it is extremely urgent or unavoidable. Cases will be registered against family members who allow elderly people to go out for buying medicines and other essentials," she said.

Senior citizens, who live alone, can call either the Fire (101) or Police (100) departments for any help and to get things they need, the collector said.

Whatever relaxations were in place have also been withdrawn with effect from Thursday, she added.

Wayanad and Thiruvananthapuram come under the "Orange B" zone where there are some relaxations.

However, Thiruvananthapuram city limits falls under the hotspot area.

Police said a case was also registered against a doctor and her husband who entered Kerala from Tamil Nadu border.
