Oscar urges Mamata to establish separate railway division at M'lore

Mangalore, February 3: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes has urged the Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Minister of State K H Muniyappa to set up a separate railway division at Mangalore with Mangalore as the headquarter.

Acting on a memorandum given to him by the Mangalore Railway Development Action Committee, he urged both the ministers to consider the feasibility of sanctioning a new railway division to the city.

In the memorandum, the Committee opined that the establishment of Konkan railways between Kanyakumari and Mumbai, the West Coast has become a trunk line.

“Mangalore is almost in the middle of it with one of the oldest railway stations and also it links Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra together through this trunk line. Moreover, Mangalore is a transit place between Goa and Kerala. Hence from the point of view of promoting tourism, Mangalore railway station and other stations nearby have to equip themselves better,” the memorandum stated.

Other demands of the memorandum include doubling of Mangalore-Mumbai railway line, execution of second rail track between Mangalore-Hassan, completion of Shravanabelagola-Bangalore railway line and commencement of Mangalore-Shravanabelagola passenger train, providing railway connectivity from Mangalore to Bajpe international airport through Thokkur railway station, introducing train from Hubli via Londa-Kundapur-Mangalore junction to Bangalore, improvement of Mangalore junction station, New Mangalore Hyderabad Express train via Arisikere-Chitradurga etc.

Mangaluru, Jan 11: Reacting to the recent video clippings provided to the media by former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in connection with the December 19 unrest in Mangaluru, city Police Commissioner Dr PS Harsha on Saturday said that the video has to be seen in a proper sequence to come to a conclusion on the happenings of that day.

Releasing videos in bits and pieces on social media or any platform will not help disclose the truth, said Harsha.

Mangaluru, Feb 21: The local units of Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal today staged a protest in the city against Amulya Leona, who raised pro-Pakistan slogans yesterday in Bangaluru.

Amulya is the daughter of Wazi Noronha, a former leader of minority of wing of BJP in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. He had worked in support of hardline BJP leader and Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, and D N Jeevaraj, who had represented Sringeri constituency last time.

The 19-year-old B.A. student was arrested on sedition charge after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans to embarrass the organisers of a peaceful protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Demanding stringent action against Amulya, a group of activist of VHP and Bajrang Dal staged protest at Kadri Mallikatte Circle in the city. Speaking on the occasion, M B Puranik and Sharan Pumpwell demanded NIA probe into the incident.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In an operation, forest officials of Puttur has arrested two persons as many elephant tusks at Puduvettu in Belathangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Forest officials said on Wednesday the accused nabbed last night were identified as PK Dinesh from Madikeri and V Kumar from Hassan district.

Both were caught while trying to sell tusks the value of which was estimated to be lakhs.
