Mangalore, February 5: A successful and most advanced laser surgery on four ENT cancer patients was carried out at AJ Hospital and Research Centre, Kuntikana here recently.

Revealing this to media persons at Press Club here on Saturday Dr Sheethal D Jain, Consultant ENT and Laser Surgeon said though laser surgery is the most recent advancement and is performed only in few centres across the world, AJ Hospital has performed it successfully.

56 years old Ramesh Naik from Sirsi had a history of hoarse voice difficulty in breathing and noisy breathing (stridor)

He was diagnosed to have malignancy (cancer) of vocal cords (voice box). Total laryngectomy (where voice box is removed completely and patients loses his voice), radiotherapy and laser surgery are the options for this type of throat cancer.

Dr Sheetal D Jain performed this complex laser surgery on Ramesh Naik and now the patient is totally free from cancer and is able to speak like any other normal person.

Being able to speak in communicable voice is the advantage of laser surgery apart from being cured from cancer. Many patients have undergone laser surgery in A J Hospital & Research Center.

Laser surgery for cancers of mouth and throat is one of the most recent advances in surgical field. If cancer is diagnosed early (stage I or II) it can be completely cured with laser surgery and patients can retain his/her voice after the surgery said Dr Sheetal D Jain, who has undergone fellowship in advanced laser surgery from Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital & Research Centre, Pune and is routinely carrying out such surgeries.

The approximate cost of the surgery is Rs 35,000 - 45,000.

Dr Prashanth Marla, Medical Director, Shivaprasad Shetty and others were present at the press meet.

Dr Sheethal D Jain can be contacted for more details on the laser surgery at 93428 56795

Kochi, Mar 1:Adheringto a policy of "zero tolerance" towards clergy who sexually exploit minors, Pope Francis has expelled a Kerala priestconvicted of rape from all priestly duties and rights, according to church officials.

Syro-Malabar Church priest Robin Vadakkumchery is currently serving a jail term for impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Mananthavady diocese.

"Vadakkumchery has been dispensed from the exercise of priestly duties and rights. That means he has been reduced to the state of a layman", a Church official told PTI.

He was suspended from priestly duties soon after the news about his crime was reported in early 2017.

A POCSO court in Thalassery last year had sentenced Vadakkumchery to 20 years of Rigorous Imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs three lakh on him.

The priest, 50, was the vicar of the local church in Kottiyur in Kannur district and manager at the school where the victim was studying.

He was arrested two years ago while trying to flee to Canada.

The Vatican's action came two years after Pope Francis made it clear that all bishops should adhere to a policy of "zero tolerance" for clergy who sexually exploit children.
