One dies, two hurt as water tank wall collapses on them

Mangalore, February 6: One person was killed and two others sustained serious injuries when the wall of a ground level water tank inside the workers' colony at Kalavaru near Bajpe, collapsed on them on Friday night.

They were engaged by a contractor to work at the Rs 12,000 crore MRPL Phase III project site at Kalavaru. The third phase of the project envisages increased capacity of crude throughput from 11.89 million metric tonnes annually (mmtpa) to 15 mmtpa.

The deceased was Bhagat Singh (25) from Khetri Nagar of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. The injured were Rakesh Meena (22) and Ravi Naik (21) also from the same town. All are painters by profession. While Meena suffered fractures, Naik injured his eye.

On Saturday, the 1000-odd workers in the colony held a strike though it meant losing a day's wages, as they demanded to the authorities that they be taken to the mortuary.

Following the incident on Friday night, there was tension when the ambulance came to take the body to the hospital for post-mortem. The enraged workers surrounded the police demanding that somebody from their side be allowed to go with the body, for which the police denied permission. Finally the police had to resort to caning to disperse the agitated mob.

Abdul, a fitter from Gorakhpur said that the police had caned them when they wanted to send Singh's colleague with the body. "We did not demand anything. How can we? He will get what he is entitled to," he said, when asked whether they had demanded lakhs of rupees as compensation.

Dr Sanath Bhandary, plastic surgeon, AJ Hospital, said Naik had suffered a deep laceration of the right eyelid and his cornea was exposed. "He has been operated upon and is recovering. Naik will have to stay in the hospital for a week and will need another two weeks of rest," he added.

Surathkal police have registered cases against the labour contractor and the company under IPC Sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304 A (causing death by negligence) read with 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Bengaluru, Aug 2: Bengaluru based Centre for Advanced Research and Development (CARD), the research wing of organisation De scalene has come up with a device called "SHYCOCAN" (Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon) which neutralizes the coronavirus.

Speaking to news agency Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar, Chairman, Organisation De Scalene said that the device will not kill any bacteria or fungus, however, neutralizes the coronavirus particles.

"The device was tested for its safety and efficacy and is soon going to be manufactured and marketed in the US under the Enforcement Discretion policy of USFDA and in Europe as the device is CE compliant and is CE marked," said Kumar.

He also added the device will cover a volume of 10,000 cubic feet.

The device Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon (SHYCOCAN) is intended to be used in the residential, industrial and commercial environment and is designed for active containment by attenuation of Corona family of viruses. (Laboratories de Especialidades Immunological S.A. de C.V, Virucidal Activity concludes 99.9 per cent virus elimination), Kumar asserted.

"SHYCOCAN operates on regular 110/240V - 50/60 Hz wall socket and is a plug and play device, that delivers the necessary signals to a photon mediated electrons emitters (PMEE), that produces hypercharge high-velocity electrons by photon mediation that interacts with the negative seeking S-protein of Corona family of viruses thus reducing infectivity and prevent air and surface borne transmission of corona family of viruses," said Kumar.

The device does not use any chemicals, or any other consumables and does not produce harmful ozone gas or any other substances and is completely safe for use in any environment, he added.

"The attack mechanism of the Virus starts with the initial attachment of the virion to the host cell, it is initiated by interactions between the S-protein and its receptor on the "negative" cell membrane. The sites of receptor binding domains (RBD) within the S1 region of a coronavirus S-protein vary depending on the virus. 

The S-protein/receptor interaction is the primary determinant for a coronavirus to infect a host species and governs the tissue tropism of the virus. However, the end result is the fusion and release of the viral genome into the cytoplasm," said Kumar.

He continued saying that the counter mechanism by the device SHYCOCAN is that if negative seeking is the guidance mechanism of the S- Protein, attracted by the transmembrane potential of the host cells, then breaking this mechanism would block the Coronavirus infectivity and spread.

"The device has been in use for more than a year at the S-CARD campus, the headquarters of Scalene," said Kumar.

Mangaluru, Jul 22: Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, within the metropolis, has obtained approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for testing SARS-CoV-2 virus by Real Time RT-PCR technique.

This has given a lift to the prevailing Covid-19 testing services in Dakshina Kannada, according to a press release by the AJ Institute here on Wednesday.

Institute Dean stated that devoted kiosk for pattern assortment has been opened in the hospital. Staff and technicians from the Department of Microbiology have undergone coaching in molecular testing at NIMHANS, Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa has plenty on his plate ahead of the 2020-21 state budget to be presented on March 5 what with the economic slowdown and a sizeable shortfall in revenue, but the biggest worry is the uncertainty surrounding Goods and Services Tax (GST) compensation from the Centre.

There is also uncertainty over the state’s share under devolution of funds as per the 14th Finance Commission recommendation.

Finance department officials say that while Rs 3,500 crore is expected as GST compensation for every two months, the devolution of funds would have yielded about Rs 7,000 crore for the current fiscal. But the economic slowdown appears to have hit the Centre’s finances and is likely to impact the state’s share of funds.

“The GST payment for August-September came only in December and we are unsure how much we will get for October-November and December-January,” an official said. Estimates suggest the state’s share under devolution of funds could be reduced by half.

At a meeting of finance department officials last week, Yediyurappa is said to have admitted that unlike those states where non-BJP parties are in power — they have threatened agitations and court cases — the government cannot go “against” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime.

Instead, Yediyurappa has urged senior IAS finance department officials to lobby for funds with their counterparts in New Delhi. On his part, Yediyurappa is said to have already written to Modi and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to at least release the state’s share of GST compensation for the current calendar year of 2019. He is planning to personally meet the PM in Delhi to push the state’s case.
