Mangalore, February 7: A variety of delicious traditional dishes that are hardly available in restaurants, competed with each other at the Beary cultural eve organised by the Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy at Kadri Park on Sunday.

With as many as 60 women taking part in the cookery contest and 53 participants in Mehendi contest as part of the special eve, Kadri Park was literally converted into a ladies corner.

The items included erchiro pinde, basale pinde, neiyappa, muttedappa, kalthappa and guliappa, the last in both sweet and flat-tasting versions.

Another speciality that had been presented at the meet was pudyampule, a mildly-sweet and rice-based dish, made particularly to welcome the bridegroom when the groom visits the bride's house.

According to MB Abdul Rahman, Chairman of the Academy, this was the first time that the cuisines of the community were exhibited.

“We want to promote the traditional 100-year-old Beary food items which are rarely prepared in houses these days. Our objective is to provide a platform for Beary women to exhibit their talents,” he said.

The top three winners in both the competitions were awarded with prizes.
