Shiradi Ghat unlikely to be developed soon

Mangalore, February 6: Shiradi Ghat on National Highway No. 48 is unlikely to be developed before coming rainy season.


Replying to questions by presspersons here on Sunday, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Jitin Prasada said he would look into what could be done to develop the important ghat stretch which connects Mangalore with Bangalore.


An official of the ministry said on the occasion that the Planning Commission had suggested that the Ministry should consider the option of developing the stretch on build, operate and transfer (BoT) basis considering the high traffic volume on the ghat stretch.


Earlier, the Minister for Public Works C M Udasi had gone on record that a proposal to concrete the ghat stretch at an estimated cost of Rs. 100 crore was awaiting the approval of the Centre.


Mr. Udasi had blamed the delay in developing the stretch due to the delay in the approval by Union Government.


Mr. Prasada said on Sunday that he would pursue the matter.


B. Ramanatha Rai, MLA, apprised the Union Minister of the need to develop the stretch.


To a question pertaining to controversy over maintaining the width of the National Highway No. 17 at 60 m or 40 m under the four-lane project, the Minister said that he was not aware of the issue.

Mangaluru, Jul 20:  Ananthapadmanabha temple at Kudupu on the outskirts of Mangaluru will be closed for devotees on the occasion of Nagara Panchami on July 25 due to Covid-19.

Ananthapadmanabha temple at Kudupu is one of the famous temples in Dakshina Kannada dedicated to Naga (Serpent God) where Nagara Panchami is celebrated in a grand way.  The temple committee said that "Nagara Panchami will be observed on July 25. To avoid large gatherings, the entry of devotees is banned. The devotees should not visit the temple, thereby extend cooperation with the temple committee."

On the day of Nagara Panchami, no sevas, theertha and prasadam will be distributed. There will be no mass feeding as well.

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday said that the state government should provide vitamin C drug, Ayush Ministry-certified immunity boosters and sanitisers to every household in the wake of the coronavirus spread.

"Karnataka government should provide vitamin C drug, Ayush Ministry-certified immunity boosters and sanitisers to every household to fight against COVID-19," Kumaraswamy told media.

The JDS leader further stated that "appropriate medication should be provided to those who are "symptomatic" by the Karnataka government and added that "by taking such measures the government can halt the spread of the virus."

If the government is not able to provide the health kit to everyone then at least they should give it to the BPL families, he added.

Kumaraswamy also stressed upon organising awareness campaigns about the coronavirus and use of supplements among the masses to prevent themselves from contracting the infection.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka has recorded 38,843 cases of COVID-19 to date.

Udupi, Jul 21: Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swami, the chief pontiff of Puthige Mutt, has tested positive for coronavirus. 

The pontiff got admitted into KMC Hospital Manipal last night and his treatment is in progress at the said hospital.

He was supposed to initiate his annual Chaturmasa Vruta at Padigaru Mutt on Tuesday.

According to sources, he was suffering from fever and hence he opted to get tested for covid-19. His health condition is said to be stable.
