It's women's raj in ZP; KT Shailaja elected Prez, Dhanalaxmi her Deputy

Mangalore, February 8: BJP re-established its firm grip on Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat when its nominees KT Shailaja Bhat and Dhanalaxmi Janardana D got elected as President and Vice-President respectively on Tuesday in the election held at Nethravathi Auditorium of ZP here.

While Shailaja from Vittla constituency defeated former ZP President Mamatha D S Gatti of the Congress to the post of President, Dhanalakshmi from Dharmasthala defeated former ZP member Yashawanthi Alva to the post of vice-president by an identical 24-11 margin.

Mysore Regional Commissioner M.V. Jayanthi, who conducted the election, declared that KT Shailaja and Dhanalaxmi got elected and will be holding the office till October 7, 2012. CEO of ZP P Shivashankar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma were present.

Speaking to media persons later, Shailaja Bhat said she would accord priority to basic amenities in the district and would focus on roads and other amenities in rural areas.

“I had never been an aspirant to the post of ZP President. But I am grateful to my party which selected me,” she said.

Women's raj

With this election, both the top posts of the district-level local government have gone to women as both the posts were reserved for women's category.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP District unit President Padmanabha Kottary, former ZP President Santhosh Kumar Bhandary and BJP workers in large numbers congratulated the winners.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: A 66-year old man from the city, became the thirteenth COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, Health Department officials said on Thursday.

The elderly patient from Bengaluru, who was coronavirus positive died on April 15 at Victoria Hospital in the city, officials said.

"He was referred from a private hospital and was admitted in Victoria Hospital and was on ventilator support since April 10," they added.

A 80-year old woman in Belagavi and a 65-year old man from Chikkaballapura had also died on Wednesday.

Kasaragod, Jun 2: Kumbala police on Tuesday arrested 20 persons on charges of misbehaving and obstructing a medical team who were on official duty for Covid-19.

Police sources said the incident occurred at Kumbala beach near here on Monday evening when a group of locals misbehaved and obstructed an eight-member medical team, comprising of doctors and health workers, from carrying out a survey to asertain whether there has been a community spread of Covid-19 in that locality.

The health team was on a mission to gather data of people who had interacted with expatriates after they had returned to hometown recently.

Kolhapur, May 27: Praising the Muslims of Ichalkaranji town in the Kolhapur district for making invaluable contribution for setting up of a new intensive care unit in Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) hospital for treatment of corona infected patients, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said that with this donation, they have set an ideal example before the country.

While dedicating a 10-bed ICU unit at IGM hospital online from Mumbai, during Eid al Fitr, Mr Thackeray said that by donating Rs 36 lakh for ICU unit at IGM hospital, the Muslim community has set an ideal example before the country as to how to celebrate the festival.

The Muslims of Ichalkaranji made the donation following an appeal by the state government about avoiding unnecessary expenses for celebrating the Eid.

Minister of State for Health Rajendra Patil-Yadravkar, MP Dharysheel Mane, MLAs Prakash Awade and Raju Awale, district collector Daulat Desai, district superintendent of police Dr Abhinav Deshmukh, Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Aman Mittal, district surgeon Dr B C Kempipatil and others were present on the occasion.
