Mangalore, February 9: Renowned film director and writer Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar has expressed grave concern over the storm of liberalisation and modernisation in the country, which according to him moving is in the wrong direction.

Speaking after receiving Prof SVP Memorial award-2011 at a programme organised by city based Prof SV Parameshwara Bhatta Memorial Committee at Canara College here on Tuesday, Chandrashekhar said that farmers too have been losing interest on farming these days due to the impact of the new phenomenon.

The development that we are witnessing in this country is mere prima facie, he said adding that hundreds of thousands of houses in the rural areas of this country still do not have proper toilet and sanitation facilities, although you can find mobile in everybody's hand.

Lamenting the strange contradictions of the system, he said you can very easily borrow loan if you want to buy a car in this county, but slog for days together to get an education loan!

“There is shortage of 100 metric tonnes of food in this country and if the same situation continues, the shortage will increase twofold or even threefold in a decade, as the anti-nature activities are going on in far foot”, he said.

Litterateur Erya Lakshminarayan Alva presided over the programme. Prof Na Damodar Shetty, Chandrakala Nandavara and others were present.

The award, which includes a cash of Rs 10,000 was conferred on Chandrashekhar to mark the birth anniversary of Prof SV Parameshwara Bhatta.
