Udupi, February 9: Senior BJP man Katapady Shankar Poojary, representing Kaup ZP constituency, has been elected as the President of Udupi Zilla Panchayath. In addition to SSLC, Shankar Poojary is a government diploma holder in Co-operation (GDC).

Jyothi S Shetty of BJP representing Mandarthi constituency has been elected his deputy. They will head the Udupi ZP for 20 months from Feb 9, 2011 to Oct 8, 2012.

All the 16 BJP members voted for Shankar Poojary and Jyothi S Shetty, while the Congress candidates Diwakar Kundar and Mallika Balakrishna Poojary, got only nine votes.

Divisional Commissioner MV Jayanthi was the returning officer. Assistant Regional Commissioner Manjunath Nayak, Deputy Commissioner –in charge- Prabhakar, ZP CEO Rajashekhar assisted in the election process.

Speaking on the occasion Shankar Poojary said that his priorities would be facilitating drinking water supply, developing rural minor roads and solid waste management.

With regard to more powers to Zilla Panchayath, Poojary said that as the state government had agreed in principle to implement the Third Finance Commission Report, submitted by AG Kodgi and BJP had also included the same in its election manifesto, he hopes that would come in to effect from April 2011.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, outgoing ZP Presdient Gladis Almeida, District BJP President Uday Kumar Shetty and others congratulated the newly-elected ZP heads.

Mar 30: the UAE Cabinet approved a series of new initiatives, foremost among which was the automatic extension of residence permits expiring from March 1.

The residence visas would be extended for a renewable period of three months without any fees to ease the economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis on residents, official news agency WAM reported.

The Cabinet has also waived the administrative fines associated with infractions on the services provided by the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship, starting April 1 and lasting for a renewable period of three months.

The initiatives also entail granting a temporary license to use digital solutions for remotely notarising and completing judicial transactions.

Government services expiring from March 1 will also be extended from April 1 for a renewable period of three months. The decision applies to all federal government services, including documents, permits, licenses and commercial registers.

The UAE has introduced a slew of initiatives to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, including the online renewal of driving licences and vehicle’s registration cards.

The country’s telecom regulator, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), also issued a directive that no mobile service with expired ID documents will be disconnected or suspended in the UAE.

The UAE has reported a total of 611 Covid-19 infections and five related deaths in the country.

A national sterilisation programme is underway that will continue until Saturday April 4, concluding on the morning of Sunday, April 5.

Carried out daily from 8pm until 6am the following morning, the programme will include the disinfection of private and public facilities.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: With two more people testing positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka, the state's corona cases count has reached 279, including 80 discharged and 12 deaths, said the government on Wednesday.

A total of 19 corona cases were confirmed in the state on Wednesday. 17 cases were reported earlier in the day, of which 15 are male patients and two are female. Of the 17 cases, nine are workers of a pharmaceutical company in Mysuru, the government stated.

Meanwhile, a 65-year-old from Chikkaballapur, who had tested positive for COVID-19, lost his life this afternoon.

"He was referred to a Bengaluru hospital with complaints of H1N1 positive, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with obstructive sleep apnea and a past history of diabetes and hypertension," the government said.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: The Karnataka government on Saturday ordered 2 lakh Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits from DHB Global and 1 lakh from other major pharmaceuticals, for the healthcare warriors treating coronavirus patients.

According to the State Health Department, these PPEs have 10 components as per global standards like a face mask to prevent healthcare professional from any liquid sprays, goggles for additional safety, N95 masks for protection of nasal and mouth areas, surgical masks, nitrile gloves, coverall suit, shoe cover, waste disposable bag, plastic apron, and protective gear.

Each of the products should have the relevant certificate from the Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) or equivalent certification.
