Awards for academic excellence given away at Yenepoya programme

Mangalore, February 10: The Academic Excellence Awards function for the students of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts who have excelled in SSLC, PUC and Under Graduate examinations organized by the Yenepoya Foundation, a unit of Yenepoya Moideen Kunhi Memorial Educational & Charitable Trust was held at the Indoor Auditorium of Yenepoya University, Deralakatte near here on Thursday.

Oscar Fernandes, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the talent generated in the country is being taken away by the western countries and these people are helping build nations. “We have to retain this pool of talent by creating opportunities in our country,” he opined. However, he said, India is witnessing reverse brain drain with the growing economy, as these people are migrating back to India, adding that “Rajiv Gandhi had foreseen that the brain drain from India was actually creating a brain bank”

Government of India has taken up several measures in the field of education. The gross enrollment ratio for higher education in our country is 12.4% and the Centre intends to bring it to about 30% by the year 2020.

UT Khader MLA called upon the students to develop their personalities in various aspects along with the formal education.

Y Muhammad Kunhi, Chairman, YMK Memorial Educational and Charitable Trust presided over the function.

Oscar Fernandes distributed the proficiency prizes for the students.

According to organizers, 206 students who have scored highest and 15 minority institutions who have secured 100% percentage result were given away cash prizes ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 and certificates.

B Ahmed Haji Mohiuddin, Trustee of Islamic Academy of Education welcomed the gathering.

Blossom Oscar Fernades, Y Abdulla Kunhi, Dr P Chandramohan, Vice Chancellor of the Yenepoya University, Dr Janardana Konaje, Registrar, Abhayachndra, MLA, PV Mohan, Member of AICC, Dr CP Habiburrahman, Chairman of Unity Health Complex, Vinay Kumar Sorake and others were present.

Bengaluru, Mar 31: The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Karnataka rose to 98 on Tuesday, according to the state government.

This includes 3 deaths and 6 patients who were cured and discharged, leaving the active cases to 89.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj S Bommai said that his government has succeeded in tracking more than 24 people in Bengaluru, who attended the Tablighi Jamat event in Delhi held earlier this month.

"Over 24 people, who attended Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi, tracked in Bengaluru. We have quarantined 54 people. 8 people also in Bidar. 1 person found positive in Bidar and we have quarantined him. There are people who attended jamaat from almost all districts of the state," Bommai told news agency here.

Delhi's Nizamuddin area emerged as a hotspot after a religious meeting was held at Markaz by the Tableeghi Jamaat earlier this month, and several COVID-19 positive cases have been found among those who attended the gathering.

At least 24 people staying at Markaz building in Nizamuddin area of the national capital have tested positive for coronavirus, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday.

"All of them are being screened. We are not certain of the number but it is estimated that 1500-1700 people had assembled at the Markaz building. 1033 people have been evacuated so far - 334 of them have been sent to the hospital and 700 sent to quarantine center. A total of 24 positive cases have been found so far," he said while speaking to reporters here.

The minister also slammed the organizers of the religious event saying that they have committed a grave crime.

Bengaluru, May 10: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said that Congress will make travel arrangements for stranded Keralites in the state in order to facilitate them to reach their homes.

"On the request made by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has appointed MLA NA Haris as in-charge coordinator to look after the Kerala citizens stranded in Karnataka," DK Shivakumar, President of Karnataka Congress said in a letter addressed to Kerala Congress.

"MLA Haris will guide and assist the Kerala citizens and make the travel arrangements for those who have obtained travel passes from concerned districts after discussing with government officials to send them to their respective places with government's approval," he added.

Shivakumar shared the contact details of MLA NA Haris and a helpline number for people to register their details.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on May 1, issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 and also allowed the movement of migrant workers, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places, by special trains, to their homes.
