Palemar visits Manipal village hit by leaking hospital waste, officer feigns ignorance

Manipal, February 11: Even as the Minister for Environment and Ports Krishna Palemar rushed to inspect the contamination caused by the under treated liquid waste from Kasturba Medical Hospital, Manipal, at Kodi of Saralebettu, Assistant Environment Officer, Udupi, Bhaskar pleaded his ignorance, in the presence of the public.

Residents of Saralebettu had complained of sewage water discharged from Kasturba Hospital entering their fields, gardens and even leaking in to their open wells, creating unhealthy environment and creating nuisance.

They had complained of foul smell, contamination of drinking water, skin diseases, mosquito breeding and fungus infections.

Palemar, on Friday, visited the spot and ordered the officials to take the water samples from the site for testing. "It may be a big or small establishment. All are equal before law. If the charges are proved guilty will not be spared. Punishment for contaminating drinking water is 7 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 1 lakh. It is a criminal offence," he added.

Vittu Poojary, an 80 year old farmer explained their worries to the minister. Estate Officer of Manipal University Jai Vittal said that only treated water was being released from Kasturba Hospital.

Relpying to press persons Palemar assured to take necessary measures to the menace of fly ash created by the Nagarjuna Power project area in Yellur and Santhoor villages.

Sindhu B Rupesh transferred; Dr Rajendra K V is new DC of Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, July 28: In an unexpected development, the government of Karnataka has transferred Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh.

The development comes days after the IAS officer warned of legal action against those attacking cattle traders in the region.

Another IAS officer Dr Rajendra K V who was the CEO of Belagavi Zilla Panchayat, has been transferred and posted as the new Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

Dr Rajendra is a medical doctor graduated from Bapuji Medical College, Davangere. He had secured the 32nd rank in the civil services examination in 2013.

Sindhu B Rupesh had taken over as DK DC in September 2019. Now, she is posted as the director, electronic delivery citizen services (EDCS), DP & AR (e governance) Bengaluru.

57-yr-old woman dies protesting against CAA, NRC at Park Circus

Kolkata, Feb 2: A protester at Park Circus, known as Shaheen Bagh of Kolkata, died last night after she fell ill during her agitation against CAA, NRC and NPR.

The woman has been identified as Sameeda Khatun (57) who was a resident of Entally area of the city. According to protesters, Khatun who was asthmatic patient died after suffering a cardiac arrest. She is survived by husband and eight children.

Around 250 women from Kolkata have been holding a peaceful sit-in at Park Circus Maidan since January 7 to protest against CAA, NRC and NPR and demanding the withdrawal of the new citizenship law.

Research Scholar at Rabindra Bharati University, Nousheen Baba Khan who has been spearheading the Park Circus protest since the beginning, told the newspaper, “Sameeda Khatun was a regular face at the protest and she was not well as she had asthma.

Last evening she came to me complaining that she is having trouble in breathing. We immediately took her to Chittaranjan Hospital where doctors said she had suffered a cardiac arrest. We later took her to Islamia Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead,” said Khan.

Twitter briefly blocks Karnataka BJP’s official account over provocative tweets

Social media giant Twitter briefly blocked the Karnataka BJP's account after it posted several provocative tweets and taunted Muslim women.

Ironically, the BJP called its unhygienic tweets as "liberal views". "It is unfortunate that our handle was locked out by Twitter for speaking the truth about liberals," it said.

"A big thanks for your support and encouragement. Satymeva Jayate. Jai Hind," the political party said to its supporters.

However, it did not specify for how long Twitter blocked its account but tweeted again on Wednesday after Monday.

Last week Karnataka BJP drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

It tweeted on Monday, accusing Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Vijay Bahuguna for "cheating" Dalits.

Karnataka BJP spokesperson G. Madhusudhan said that he had no idea about the account being blocked and then unblocked by Twitter.

"What has happened? I don't know," said Madhusudhana.

Reacting to the drubbing BJP suffered in the Delhi Assembly polls, the party tweeted that there is no need to lose heart.

"Now is the time to go back to voters to win their hearts and minds. Let us plan for 2025 from today. We are with you," tweeted Karnataka BJP on Wednesday.

Though BJP congratulated Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for winning the Delhi polls, the party highlighted that it managed to increase it vote share by six per cent compared to 2015.
