Cashew Fair attracts farmers and citizens alike

Mangalore, February 13: There is a need to increase areas under cashew cultivation as the opportunity for the cashew production in Karnataka is ample, said S D Sampath Samrajya, a senior member of Board of Management of Horticulture University (Bagalkot).

Speaking at 'Cashew Mela 2011', organised under the joint auspicious of the Horticulture University, Horticulture Research Station (Ullal), DK district Jilla Krishika Samaja, Agriculture University at Horticulture Research Station at Ullal on Saturday, he said compared to the neighbouring states of Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra, the average production of cashew nut in Karnataka is less.


He also said cashew earned foreign exchange of about Rs. 3,000 crore, but its production had remained static in the country at 4.5 lakh to 5 lakh tonnes.

Cashew processing industries needed 12 lakh tonnes in the country and they were forced to import raw cashew seeds. In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi alone there were more than 200 cashew processing units. There was a need to augment cashew production to meet the demand, he added.

S B Dandin, Vice-Chancellor of the Horticulture University, said his University would soon introduce stipend based courses to prepare youths to take to agriculture.

He said he had recommended the State Government to stress on “A-learning” (Agriculture-learning) in the “Agri Budget” which Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa has proposed to introduce from this year.

Revealing that he was part of the consultative meetings in this regard till last Friday, Dandin said that he wanted agriculture-oriented lessons for students from classes 8 to plus 2 level so that youngsters remained grounded to agriculture instead of clamouring for medical and engineering courses.

Attractive fair

The 'Cashew Mela' attracted a large number of farmers and enthusiastic citizens from different parts of the state. The fair was indeed an annual interactive field day for farmers under Ullal based Cashew Research Station, functioning under the Bangalkot-based University.

Varieties of seeds and cashew fruits were on display for the public. Cashew juice making machine and cashew nut cutting machines were also part of the exhibition. The exhibition also had a presentation on cashew production, methods of planting cashew saplings, how to get more yield, diseases affecting cashew trees and ways to control it etc.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue. 

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari. 

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position. 

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

New Delhi, May 3: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has crossed over one million RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 on Saturday evening marking a big landmark, ICMR officials said.

"We have tested about 10,40000 tests till Saturday evening. In a few days, we have increased our testing capacity. ICMR has been doing more than 70,000 tests in the last two consecutive days," he said.

On Saturday, ICMR released that a total of 976363 samples have been tested till date. From May 1 till evening on Saturday, 1,37,346 tests were done.

The top three states which are doing vigorous testing includes--Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. As on date, these three states have conducted more than one lakh test respectively.

However, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi still need to ramp up their testing capacity.

ICMR has always emphasised that the confirmatory test for diagnosis of COVID-19 infection is RT-PCR test of the throat and/or nasal swab, which detects virus at an early stage. Recently, Dr GS Toteja, Additional Director General of ICMR had said that to contain coronavirus infection, RT-PCR tests must be continued vigorously as the principal diagnostic tests.

RT-PCR tests are now available in 310 government laboratories and 111 private set up across the country.

On Friday, the Centre informed that ICMR has ordered 21.35 lakh diagnostic kits. As on date, India has reported about 37,776 confirmed coronavirus cases and 1223 deaths.
