Pilikula Kambala concludes

Mangalore, February 14: The Kambala (buffalo race) at the Nethravathi-Phalguni Jodukere Kambala at Pilikula organised by Pilikula Niasargadhama Society and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Zilla Kambala Samiti at Moodeshedde concluded on Sunday.

Buffaloes of Salethur Kuntadka Monappa Gowda won the first prize in Kanehalage category. The buffalos were driven by Guruvayanakere Ramlan. Kedubari Guruvappa Poojary bagged the second prize in the same category.

Hagga Hiriya: Moodbidri Karinje Vinu Vishwanatha Shetty (First) and Sukumar Shetty (Second).

Hagga Kiriya: Moodbidri Hosabettu Erimaru Barke Chandrahas Sadhu Sanil bagged the prize.

Adda Halage: Haleppady Mundottu Sathish Gatty and Eedu Makkila Sanath Kumar Jain bagged first and second prizes respectively.

Negilu Hiriya: Alevoor Thenku Mane Raghu Shetty and Sanur Sundara K Acharya won the prizes.

Negilu Kiriya: Boladaguthu Sathish Shetty and Sujal Shailesh Kumar emerged on top.

More than 100 teams from different parts of the two districts participated in the event.

The event began with the trial runs in “Negilu” section, where the rider runs along with the buffalos holding the plough.

This was followed by runs with the races where the buffalos are tied by rope and also the “Halige” section where the rider stands on a wooden plank.

The event's highlight was the “Kanalige” section. Here the rider has to press the wooden plank and make the water splash and touch the banner tied about 7 feet from the ground.

The event was inaugurated by MLA Abhayachandra Jain.

J.R. Lobo, Executive Director, Pilikula Nisargadhama, HJ Bhandary, Director, Dr Jeevandhar Ballal, President, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Zilla Kambala Samiti, Dr KV Rao were among those who participated in the function.


A hen show was also held during the event.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: No bandh-like situation prevailed in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, despite a nationwide strike called by trade union employees. Day-to-day activities are not disturbed, as buses and auto-rickshaws are moving as usual. 

However, in Bunder area, one of the business hubs of Mangaluru city, most of the shops today remained shut. As a result business was partially hit in the coastal city.

In other parts of Mangaluru city business firms, and market places are also open. Schools and colleges have not declared a holiday. government offices are also functioning as usually.

However, branches of many banks, excluding SBI, are closed for customers.

Members of various trade unions took out a rally and staged a protest in front of the Town Hall in Mangaluru.

Along with minimum wages, cancellation of contract labour system, no privatisation, welfare of farmers and other demands were also highlighted by the protestors. 

Slogans were also raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and anti-labour policies of his government. 

Members of AITUC, TUCC, AIUTUC, AIDYO, AIBEA, BSNLEU, INTUC, AIIEA, and associations of Anganwadi workers, mid-day meal workers, medical representatives, KSRTC employees, gram panchayat employees, and others took part in the protest.

Mangaluru, May 15: Dakshina Kannada saw a record spike in the number of fresh COVID-19 cases today, which triggered panic among the people of the district, which is currently under orange zone.   

According to the mid-day bulletin of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, as many as 16 people from Dakshina Kannada tested positive for the covid-19. 

Among them 15 are the Gulf returnees who were brought by an Air India Express special flight from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport on May 12. 

As many as 179 repatriates had landed at Mangaluru Airport. Among them 125 are quarantined in Dakshina Kannada, 49 in Udupi and five in Uttara Kannada districts.  

Meanwhile, a 68-year-old woman from Surathkal area in Mangaluru, who is suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) was also tested covid-19 positive.

This is the highest number of cases reported in a single day since first case registered in the district on March 22 when Dubai-bound youth from Bhatkal was tested positive. 

With this the total number of covid-19 cases in the district mounted to 50 including five deaths. Many of them have returned home after recovery.

3 members of a family test positive

According to Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, three members of a same family are among 15 gulf returnees who are tested positive.  They are a 45-year-old man, his 33-year-old wife and their 6-year-old child. 

Six among those who tested positive today are above 60 years of age, said the deputy commissioner.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: About 20,000 quintal boiled rice has been distributed among the ration card holders through Public Distribution System, District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Saturday.

As people in the district prefer boiled rice over white rice, the government has given approval for distributing boiled rice. From next month, only boiled rice will be distributed in the district at fair price shops.

In the last two days, rice has been distributed among 61,302 cardholders in the district.
