Udupi, February 18: Udupi district unit of JD (S) on Friday staged a unique protest against the hike in the milk prices by milking a cow at Tiger Circle, Manipal and symbolically selling the milk sachets at cheaper rates.

District JD (S) President Deviprasad Shetty, former MLA UR Sabhapathi, General Secretary of Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samithi, former TP members Bhagyalxmi and Sathish Poojary, JD (S) youth wing president Vasudev Rao and others participated in the protest.

Like the hawkers, agitators sold the milk sachets at Rs 18 even when the KMF has increased the price to Rs 22 per liter.

Deviprasad Shetty said that during the JD (S) rule, even when the milk prices were raised by just 50 paise, BJP had made a hue and cry. Now, in the BJP rule, prices of milk have gone up by Rs 5 in a year, alleging a foul play in the deal to hike the prices in the name of dairy farmers.

Sabhapathi condemned the hike in the milk prices and said that when the government could supply rice, through fair price shops, why not milk.

He said that he was not against giving additional Rs 2 to the dairy farmers. But, that should not be a burden on the common man. Government should provide subsidy for supplying milk at a lower price, he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner has lodged a complaint with the Police alleging that his signature was forged in a holiday circular for schools and colleges in the district during National General Strike called by Trade Unions.

It may be recalled that the district administration had declared a holiday for all educational institutions on December 20 and 21 in the backdrop of the December 19 violence.

A few miscreants had forged this order and circulated it on social media stating that a holiday had been declared for schools and colleges in the district on January 8.
