Mangalore, February 24: Terming the attacks on churches in Mangalore and other parts of Karnataka in September 2008 and its aftermath as and “state- tyranny” and “state sponsored terrorism”, Justice Michael F. Saldanha, retired judge of Karnataka High Court said that it is obvious that the attacks were “pre planned” by the Bharatiya Janata Party led Government.

Addressing media persons after releasing an independent fact finding report on the ill famous attacks, Justice Saldanha said that unlike Justice B.K. Somasekhara Commission, which was appointed to cover up the unpardonable crime committed against Christian community and their places of worship, he has prepared the report without any bias or prejudice after visiting 431 spots and meeting over 14,00 people.

“There is ample evidence for what I have said in my report,” he said.

The newly released report was the outcome of a public inquiry conducted at the instance of the People's Union for Civil Liberties and Transparency International India (TII), Karnataka Chapter.

Justice Saldanha also recalled that when the Government appointed Somasekhara Commission to inquire into the attacks, Christian organisations had told Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa that his candidature “did not inspire confidence”.

According to the new report, the attacks are representative of the hidden agenda of the party in power, the BJP. “Each one of the attacks and incidents were instigated and pre-planned. They were state-sponsored and not only supported by the state but were also covered up by the state. The responsibility of this devolves on Home Minister V.S. Acharya and Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa,” the report asserts.

The report also indicts the state police force for “coercing” the perpetrators of violence and allegedly even guiding assault in some places. In one instance, “the police stormed the church at Pemannur, obstructed and stopped the Mass, assaulted the celebrant priest, and standing on top of the altar, directed the assault,” the report alleges.

“As far as the saffron activists are concerned, the Bajrang Dal leader and the leader of the Sri Rama Sene have at all times boldly and openly admitted that it was their respective organisations which had undertaken all the attacks. The evidence clearly established that as far as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are concerned, the RSS was involved,” the report states alleging “total collusion” between the BJP Government and these organisations.

To support Justice Saldanha's report, P B D'sa, the State President of PUCL, produced a few stone pebbles, each weighing between 200 gram to 300 gram, and outdated tear gas shells, which were collected from the premises of Permude and Permannur churches soon after the attacks.

D'sa said that use of tear gas shells, which were expired in 2002, on Christians who were protesting against the attacks, clearly shows the brutal intention of police. He also alleged that the stone pebbles, which were hurled at Churches, had indeed been brought from a river bank in a vehicle by police and saffron forces together. “The driver of the vehicle in which the police transported these stone pebbles revealed this truth when we contacted him,” he said adding that these pebbles cannot be found in the surroundings of the attacked Churches.

New Delhi, Feb 6: BJP MP Tejaswi Surya said on Wednesday that the majority community has to remain vigilant or Mughal rule will return to the country, as he slammed the anti-CAA protest at Shaheen Bagh.

He was participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks on the President's Address in Lok Sabha.

Referring to the ongoing protest at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act, he said, "Unless majority community remains vigilant, the days of Mughal Raj may not be far away."

Surya also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for resolving several critical issues which had been pending for several decades.

The CAA, he said, was aimed at resolving the issues emanating from Partition and added, "The new India cannot to built without healing the wounds of the past."

He said that the CAA was about giving citizenship to persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Bangaladesh and Afghanistan and not for taking away anyone's citizenship.

Under the leadership of Modi, Surya said, several issues of the past have seen closure. These include abrogation of Article 370, construction of Ram temple, Bodo problems and abolition of Triple Talaq.

K Sudhakaran (Cong) said that a time when the economy was going through its worst phase and unemployment was high, the President in his speech talked about making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024.

On the comments of the government functionaries that fundamentals of the economy are strong, he said the same expression was used by the then US President George Bush, days before the collapse of the America's iconic investment banker Lehman Brothers.

Not only that, Sudhakaran said even before the Great Depression, the then US President used to say that fundamentals of their economy were strong.

Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal) demanded that the government set up All India Judicial Services Commission to ensure representation of the backward community in the judiciary.

Khagen Murmu (BJP) regretted that West Bengal government was not implementing the welfare schemes of the Centre in the state.

Badruddin Ajmal (AIUDF) said that people of all communities have fought for freedom of the country and it would be incorrect to declare everyone opposing the government's policies as 'gaddar' (traitor).

He said that the government should talk to people protesting against the CAA at Shaheen Bagh and other places, and explain the provisions to them.

Shrirang Appa Barne (Shiv Sena) demanded that the ruling party fulfil all promises it had made to the people of the country.

He regretted that although the government promised to double the income of farmers by 2022, farmers were still committing suicide.

Bidar, Feb 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded the State government to withdraw the sedition case against a mother and a teacher of Shaheen school immediately.

“The police can’t execute anything without the government’s permission. The sedition case against two women should be withdrawn immediately. I will raise the matter in the Assembly to draw the government’s attention,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after meeting the woman at the prison here.

He clarified that he visited the woman not to support the school, but to extend moral support to her.

“I am an advocate and I can clearly establish based on my experience that staging a satirical play doesn’t amount for sedition. It doesn’t even defame anybody. Three cases of sedition have been registered across the state,” he charged.

He alleged that the government was following dual policy. Though the Supreme Court had concluded that the demolition of Babri Masjid was illegal, a play dealing with the demolition was staged at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s school.
The sedition case had not been registered for staging the play.

He charged that there was an undeclared emergency in the country as the freedom of expression was being suppressed.
