Mangalore decked up for Maha Shivaratri

Mangalore, March 1: The city of Mangalore has geared up for the Great Night of Shiva, popularly known as Maha Shivaratri. The festival will be observed with traditional fervour and gaiety across various temples in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday, March 2.

A large number of people are expected to throng major temples across the city including Sri Kshetra Kadri and Sri Kshetra Gokarnanateshwara early on Wednesday morning.

The major Shiva temples in the city are fully decked up and geared up for this occasion.

Maha Shivaratri, is a festival during which devotees give up food and sleep, to engage in prayer and worship of Shiva for spiritual purification.

Hindus believe that it is a rare occasion for the individual soul to be aware of the supreme consciousness. It is a festival of auspiciousness.

Devotees sing in Shiva's praise to acquire spiritual power. They worship Shivalinga with bilva leaves. According to their belief it is the symbolical union of individual soul with the supreme soul.

Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple will observe double jubilee as it will receive a grand gift of silver chariot on the occasion of Shivaratri.

The ratha weighing 4,500 kg and gifted to the Sri Kshetra by Ramesh Kumar, Urmila Ramesh Kumar and family was brought to the Kshetra with pomp and splendour on February 18.

Ahead of the formal dedication of the ratha, various pre-rituals have been going on since February 25.

New Delhi, Mar 26: While the humans are on lockdown and spending time with their families, animals are free and without any fear roaming around on the otherwise busy roads. From Malabar civets to large Indian bisons, animals are enjoying this time.

Indian Forest Officer Susanta Nanda recently shared a video with the caption, "Indian bison( the gaur) goes for a street walk. The largest extant Bovine, is native to South and Southeast Asia. It can be very aggressive. Rare to see in markets."

The 8-second video shows the large animal freely walking in the market area of Chikmagalur district, Karnataka, while the few onlookers on the road get aside and watch the Bison with utmost amazement.

The videos of animals having a gala time on the roads have become common. After the video was posted online, it became a hit. The clip garnered over 3.1k views and over 100 retweets.

Mysuru, Jun 18: The Karnataka government's proposal announced on Thursday to hold online classes for students amid concerns over COVID-19 has not gone down well with thousands of tribal students residing in villages across the state.

A team from Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) visited a few tribal hamlets in Mysuru and Kodagu recently and found that the students, unlike their urban counterparts, lack accessibility to not just smartphones and computers, but basic necessities like power supply.

''When such is the situation in the tribal hamlets, how can you expect students to catch up on their studies if classes are held online?'' wondered M L Parashurama Member, KSCPCR, who toured villages like Thithimathi, Beematagere, Devamachchi and Gaddadi in Kodagu's Virajpet taluk, besides Bavali, Balyadi, Machchuru, and Anemone in Mysuru's HD Kote taluk along with Chairperson Antony Sebastian.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.
