Glory of Vijayanagara Kingdom to come alive in M'lore

Mangalore, March 3: The stage is set to relive the grand coronation of Vijayanagara emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya in the coastal city of Mangalore, five centuries after he ruled the empire in the Deccan plateau of south India.

The Karnataka State Tourism Department, Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and Dakshina Kannada district administration is jointly organising a sound and light mode programme on Saturday and Sunday to mark the 500th anniversary of the coronation of the renowned king.


Announcing this at a press meet held at Zilla Panchayat on Thursday morning Additional Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma said that entry would be free for all visitors to the programme, which will commence at 7:00 pm on both days.

Titled 'Rayaratha', the 70 minute programme will chronicle the rise and fall of the Vijayanagara kingdom including the birth of Krishnadevaraya, coronation, marriage, friendship with British, stone chariot, Ugra Narasimha, Vithat's temple, Viroopaksha temple, Hampi Bazar, elephants' mouth, Anjaneya peak, sister rock and other memorials.

Prior to the stage programme, the organisers have made arrangements for the school children to closely watch the glory of the historical kingdom of Hampi, will be recreated at the Nehru Maidan from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Friday and from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday.

Assistant Director of Tourism Department Mahesh Kumar was also present at the press meet.

Mangaluru, Jul 5: A COVID-19 patient escaped from a hospital in Mangaluru on Sunday, Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Vikas Kumar.

A total of 1,925 cases of COVID-19 and 37 deaths recorded in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 23,474.

The health department informed that the death toll rose to 372 while active cases stood at 13,251 in the state.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India has recorded 6,73,165 numbers of COVID-19 cases and 19,268 deaths.

New Delhi, May 14: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the Al-Hind Islamic State (IS) Bengaluru module case has announced a cash reward of Rs three lakh for wanted absconder Abdul Mateen Taahaa.

An NIA spokesperson in Delhi said, "We have declared a cash reward of Rs three lakh for providing any information leading to arrest of Taahaa." The spokesperson said that Taahaa, 26, a resident of Shimoga in Karnataka is wanted in Al-Hind ISIS Bengaluru module case that the agency registered this year. The NIA had taken over the probe from the Karnataka Police.

According to the NIA officials, the case relates to ISIS-linked terror group formed by arrested accused Mehboob Pasha, along with accused Khaja Moideen aka Jalal and his associates involved in the murder of a Hindu leader in Tamil Nadu. The official said that Pasha conducted several meetings in 2019 at his residence in Bengaluru to hatch the conspiracy, by radicalising and recruiting other co-accused to carry out terror activities and join ISIS in Afghanistan or Syria.

The NIA has arrested 12 accused namely Pasha, Imran aka Imran Khan, Mohammed Haneef Khan, Mohammed Mansoor Ali Khan, Saleem Khan aka Kolar Saleem, Hussain Sharieff, Ejaz Pasha aka Azaz Pasha, Zabiulla, Syed Azmathulla, Syed Fasiur Rehman, Mohammed Zaid and Sadiq Basha.

The official said that Taahaa is a friend of arrested accused Saleem and Zaid, through whom he contacted arrested accused Pasha of Al-Hind Trust and was also associated with his online foreign handler.

Bengaluru, May 15: There is no trace of community spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Karnataka due to the strict measures taken by the State Government, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Friday.

All those tested positive for the virus here have arrived from other states and are currently being treated in quarantine centres, he tweeted.

Over 25 per cent of the COVID-19 positive cases, which were detected in the state, were related to those who had either come from abroad or other states, and only about 7 per cent cases were associated with the influenza-like diseases, his tweet further read.
