Mangalore, March 6: Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Ahmed Musliyar has floated a plan of establishing a full-fledged Islamic University within the 20 kms surroundings of Mangalore city and called upon likeminded people and organisations to support his cause.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Musliyar said that there is a need of establishing a huge Islamic institution in this part of India's west coast.

“We should bring up a younger generation of Islamic scholars well-equipped with modern tools of knowledge. An education institution is necessary to realise this long cherished dream”, he said.

The Qazi said that he has decided to take forward the vision of his predecessor Shaheed C M Abdulla Musliyar, who, in one of his letters had expressed the desire of establishing an Islamic institution similar to Darul Huda Islamic University (DHIU) situated on the banks of River Kadalundy at Chemnad in Kerala.

DHIU is affiliated to world famous Al-Azhar University, Cairo, & Jamia Millia University, New Delhi, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University, Haidrabad. There are 19 co-institutions of Academy spread all over South India.

The Qazi said that DHIU, which started functioning in 1986, has a unique system of education where a student admitted to the institute after five years of primary education has to go for 12 years of education (2+4+4+2 Preliminary, Special Secondary, Degree, Masters). After 12 years of education the student will come out as Master of Islamic Studies & Arabic language with good command over English and Urdu languages as well.

“We should take the responsibility of creating such an institution in this area upon our shoulders”, the Qazi said, adding that most of the Muslims living across the West coast of India including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, almost have a common culture and they deserve such a facility here.

“Our planned institution will differ from many traditional Islamic institutions in Kerala. Other institutions offer only religious studies while we are looking to offer a unique curriculum combining religious and material education with emphasis on different languages including English, Urdu and Arabic”, the Qazi said.
