Four killed, six injured in ghastly road accident in Mangalore

Mangalore, March 11: Four persons were killed and six others suffered serious injuries, when the car they were travelling in collided with an oncoming lorry on National Highway 48 near Addyar-Kannur on the outskirts of the city on Friday night, police sources said.

Deceased have been identified as Rakshith alias Shabari, Mushtaq Rahman, Nazeer Ahmed and Abdussamad Thangal. The injured are Mohammed Rafeeq, Basheer, Ashraf, Nandakumar, Ramachandra, car driver Aboobakar and lorry driver Shankar.

The accident has resulted in traffic jam on the high way for at least half an hour as a large number of local people gathered in the spot.

The Ambassador car carrying nine persons was on its way to BC Road from Mangalore while the tanker was coming to the city from BC Road.

The lorry driver was said to have been drunk and came on the wrong side and collided against the ill-fated car.

The impact of the mishap was such that the Ambassador car reduced to a bundle of metal.

According to the eye witnesses, the accident occurred at around 9:15 pm, when the driver of the lorry lost control over his vehicle and hit the car, which trapped under the wheels of the lorry.

The road was splashed with blood and the scene at the accident spot was terrifying.

Within a few minutes, ambulances reached the spot and shifted the dead bodies and injured to different hospitals in the city.

A case has been registered under Mangalore rural police station.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar on Saturday lodged a complaint with Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood seeking action against four BJP leaders for their alleged communal statements.

In his petition, Mr Shivakumar cited remarks made by BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje, former union minister Anant kumar Hegde, MP Renukacharya and MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal were ''vituperative statements'' which were offences under Section 153A of the IPC.

The Congress leader alleged that the four leaders ''joined in a criminal conspiracy to create enmity between Hindus and the minority community.''

Bengaluru, May 26: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah today held a video conference with Kannadiga businessmen in Saudi Arabia and paid heed to the woes of Saudi Kannadigas amidst covid-19 lockdown.

Sheikh Karnire, Director of Operations Expertise Contracting Co, Mohammad Mansoor, Chairman of Saara Group and President of OIC Bahrain, and Ismaeel, CEO of Realtech Industrial Services among others explained Mr Siddaramaiah the need to operate repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru and Bengaluru. 

They said among the thousands of stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia there are a large number of pregnant women, elderly people, patients who need immediate medical attention. 

They urged Siddaramaiah to exert pressure on the chief minister of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa and union ministers to arrange repatriation flights in the current schedule of Vande Bharat Mission itself. 

Siddaramaiah assured to take up the issue with the chief minister and other authorities concerned.

Karanataka, Apr 20: Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa launched an online crash course programme 'GetCETGo', here on Monday.

GetCETGo is the state government's free online crash course programme to help all students of Karnataka prepare for Common Entrance Test (CET) and National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

The programme was launched by the state government amid the disruption in education sector caused due to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.

Students can access the content through the web portal and the Android Application that has been developed by Sinchu Infotech and Deeksha Online.

They can also avail comprehensive study material with practice questions, chapter-wise tests, revision videos and mock tests.

According to the state government, this programme will benefit around 1,94,000 students.
