March 12, 2011
Mangalore, March 12: 'Abbakka Sankathana' a two day seminar on Abbakka Rani organized under the aegis of Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samiti in association with the Kannada and Culture Department was inaugurated at Ravindra Kalabhavan in University College here on Saturday.

After inaugurating the programme, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor TC Shivashankara Murthy said the values such as social justice, communal harmony that prevailed in the regime of Rani Abbakka are relevant even today.

He said Rani Abbakka can be considered not only as a freedom fighter but also as one of the prominent social reformers.

The Utsav Committee should also work on disseminating the information on Abbakka for present and future generation, he suggested.

Mr Murthy said that he is ready to extend his support if the Committee is willing to establish a Regional Study Centre or Rani Abbakka Study Centre in Mangalore University which can throw light on the cultural, social, political and other aspects of the “Peppar Queen” Rani Abbakka's regime.

In his presidential address, Dr M Mukunda Prabhu, Historian, said that it would be better if Committee set up a permanent auditorium and a well equipped theatre adjacent to Somanatha Temple in Ullal to conduct 'Abbakka Utsavas'.

Dr Gayathri Navada, Syndicate Member of Hampi University said the history of Abbakka is a symbol for self respect and liberty.

However, the statue of Abbakka sitting on a horse holding sword depicts the mindset of masculine society which portrayed Rani Abbakka as man.

She said the achievements and values of Rani Abbakka should be taught in Schools and Colleges.

Dr KN Vijaya Prakash, MCC Commissioner said that the significance of commemorating the Rani Abbakka more apt in the present scenario as she had fought against Portuguese with the support with people of different faiths.

MLA UT Khader, who is the honorary President of the Committee delivered introductory speech. Prof AV Navada, Convener of the Seminar spoke.

K Jayaram Shetty welcomed the gathering while Hyder Parthippady proposed vote of thanks. Bhasker Rai Kukkuvalli compered the programme.

Mangaluru, June 11: The Saudi Arabia based Expertise Contracting Company, which is repatriating its employees to India and other countries, today allocated around 90 seats of one of its chartered flights to Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia.

The Gulf Air flight took off with around 175 passengers on board from Dammam International Airport around noon local time. It is expected to land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 7 p.m. Indian time.

In fact the company had chartered the flights only to repatriate its employees. However, due to the lack of special flights under Vande Bharati Mission, the company decided to help the other stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia, who had approached Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum for help.

A company official said that around 2,000 employees from various countries in the Indian subcontinent are being repatriated, of which 1,665 are Indians.  Already hundreds of them have reached India, and hundreds are still waiting for repatriation.

“We are grateful to Expertise for allowing to travel in the flight which the company had chartered to repatriate its own employees,” said one of the passengers before boarding the flight at the airport.

Director of Expertise, KS Shaikh said the 20-year-old Expertise group, one of the largest conglomerates in the GCC operating in petrochemical and heavy equipment sectors, has more than 10,000 employees and their family members in the Gulf, mainly in Jubail, one of the largest industrial cities.

Of these, the company has chosen over 2,000 employees for the covid-related repatriations considering various emergencies. He said 12 chartered flights have been engaged to carry out the repatriation exercise to the Indian subcontinent.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Govind Karjol on Tuesday said that he is ready to quit if the post asks him to do so to pave way for smooth expansion of the Cabinet.

Responding to a question from media persons on the issue here, he said he was ready to quit his post any time.

“If the party asks me to resign now, I will send back my official car and return by bus”, he added.

Further, he opined that there should not be efforts to seek a berth in the Cabinet based on caste.

“Putting pressure on the party based on caste is not right. The party will consider those who worked for the party and also take district-wise representation into account while filling up the vacancies”, he added.
