Boy crushed to death by speeding lorry near Mangaldevi on black Sunday

Mangalore, March 13: In a gruesome early-morning accident, a six-year-old boy was crushed to death in front of Mangaladevi Temple near Jeppu on Sunday when a mini-lorry rammed into a motorbike moving in the same direction.

The deceased has been identified as Prajwal, son of Ravi Rao Acharya, a resident of Hoige Bazar. The boy, who is studying in first standard, was returning home with his grandfather Shama Rao Acharya, aged 58, who was driving the Kawasaki Boxer motor bike.

Shama Rao has also sustained injuries and understood to have broken his hand in the accident. He was heading home after having his coffee along with his grandson. He had also purchased some vegetables and other stuff.

Shama Rao, has a lathe workshop at Hoge Bazar and his son Ravi is also in the same business. The accident happened when he was driving was about to take a deviation near the Mangaladevi temple towards Mulihitlu, but the 407 vehicle, which was laden with fruits and heading towards Uppala, crashed into the bike from behind.

Prajwal flung off the bike due to the impact of the accident and rolled over by the lorry. The impact of the accident was such that the scull of the boy had come out. But Shama Rao had a miraculous escape he was thrown off to a different direction and ended up fracturing his hand.

Residents of the Mangaladevi and surrounding areas expressed shock and grief over the incident and urged the police inspector Mr Gopalkrishna Rao, who visited the spot to take steps for erecting speed breakers on the Pandeshwar-Mangaladevi stretch and also demanded that road humps must be put up on the Mangaladevi temple-Cascia Highschool road as well.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the incident. A case has been registered by the traffic east police.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: The searches by income-tax officials at the residence of south Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna at Virajpet in Kodagu district were concluded on Friday.

The searches, conducted since Thursday by sleuths from Bengaluru, were concluded on Friday morning, the family said.

Speaking to reporters outside the house, the actress's mother Suman said: "We all cooperated with the officials since Thursday. The officials asked some questions which we answered properly."

Rashmika, who was not at the residence when the I-T officials arrived, joined them on Thursday night, she added.

According to sources, IT officials from Bengaluru who arrived in three cars on Thursday verified documents pertaining to properties, bank accounts and investments.

Rashmika has acted in several Kannada and Telugu movies. Her recent film 'Sarileru Neekevvaru' opposite popular Telugu actor Mahesh Babu is in the theatres now.

Udupi/Mangaluru, Apr 3: As many as 11 liquor addicts in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have committed suicide, due to non-availability of liquor.

It is said that the District administration, in association with Psychiatrists, have taken the initiative to provide counselling services, along with telemedicine, to the addicts.

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh said on Thursday that arrangements will be made to provide treatments and personal counselling for the liquor addicts.

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Janata Dal (Secular) chief and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Sunday refuted reports of him contesting in the Rajya Sabha elections and added that he is more concerned about strengthening his party in Karnataka.

"I am not interested in going to Rajya Sabha. My concern is to build and strengthen the party in the region to the best of my ability. I had declared earlier that I will not contest elections anymore," Deve Gowda told ANI here.

"My party MP D Kupendra Reddy is there in the Rajya Sabha as of now and further decisions will be taken by the party. In March 2019, towards the end of the 16th Lok Sabha I had declared that I will not contest any more elections," Deve Gowda added.

Four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka are about to fall vacant in June this year as two of Congress, one of BJP and JD(S) MPs retire.
