Anti-endosulfan activists step up agitation, warn of moving Supreme Court

Uppinangady, March 13: Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag, the chairman of Udupi-based Human Rights Protection Foundation on Sunday urged the central government to ban use of endosulfan, failing which the NGOs will move the Supreme Court.

He was speaking at a meeting held at Alankaru, after meeting the families of the victims of endosulfan and demanded that the Government should impose a ban on the chemical within a month and should also stop its production.

Dr Shanbhag also urged the government to conduct an in-depth study of the villages that have witnessed spraying of endosulfan.

Government should also provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people, besides providing medical facilities, including door-delivery of medicines and check-up facilities.

If the government fails to fulfill these demands, the agitation will be stepped up, he warned.

The president of Alakaru Anti-Endosulfan committee president Peer Mohammed Saheb presided over the meeting. Kokkada committee president Sridhar Gowda, Puthur consumers' forum activist Sanjiv Gowda, Alankaru GP president Keshav Gowda, Perabe GP president Gangaratna Vasanth, Alankaru committee secretary Jayakar Poojary, among others, were present.

Mangaluru, Feb 9: A youth, native of Dakshina Kannada, was kidnapped and later robbed and then abandoned by a group of criminals, after he landed at the Karipur International Airport in Kerala early on Sunday morning.

In a complaint filed with the Kondotty police, the victim identified as Abdul Nazar Shamsad, said he was kidnapped while he was travelling in a shared auto from the airport to Calicut town. The kidnappers took him to an unknown destination where they tortured him.

Shamshad was reportedly subjected to physical assault and was asked to hand over the gold that he carried with him. It is learnt that the kidnappers had mistaken the youth for a gold smuggler and tortured him in order to get hold of the smuggled gold. They also stole his money and documents before abandoning him.

Uppinangady, Feb 9: Two members of a family were killed after the car collided with a tanker on the NH 75 at Bedrody near Uppinangady last night.

Police said on Sunday that the deceased have been identified as Jainy Saji (30) and her elder brother Jeeson (40).

Jainy and Jeeson were going to Uppinangady when a tanker, coming from the opposite direction, rammed into their car.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: With 12 fresh cases of the COVID-19 infection, including one woman, the total number of novel coronavirus cases in Karnataka surged to 371 on Saturday.

The sources said that as many as three new positive cases were reported from Mysuru district, followed by two each from Kalaburagi, Bhagalkote, one each case from Vijayapura, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Mandya, districts on Saturday.
