Padmashree Dr Kadri Gopalnath to receive Vandana Award

Mangalore March 14: Padmashree Dr Kadri Gopalnath, Saxophonist, has been chosen for state level “Vandana Award” given by Rotary Club of Mangalore Central in association with Rotaract Club of Mangalore.

Addressing the media persons here on Monday, Rtn Dr B Devadas Pai, Chairman, Award Committee, said Kadri Gopalnath has chosen for his contribution in the field of classical instrumental saxophone music. The award comprises of a citation, a silver plaque and a gold chain. In the past, the award was conferred to Justice Santhosh Hegde, Lokayuktha, playback singer Gurukiran, Spin Maestro B S Chandrashekar.

The award will be conferred on Friday, March 18 at Eden Aquatic and Sports Foundation, Nanthur at 8 pm. Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr Vijay Prakash will be the chief guest. Assistant Governor Rtn Usman Kukkady will be the guest of honour.

The President of the Club Rtn Herman Pereira will preside and Chairman of the award committee Rtn Dr B Devadas Pai will deliver the felicitation address.
Rtn MV Mallya, PRO, Rtn Herman Pereira, President and Rtr Darshan, President were present.

Bengaluru, May 26: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah today held a video conference with Kannadiga businessmen in Saudi Arabia and paid heed to the woes of Saudi Kannadigas amidst covid-19 lockdown.

Sheikh Karnire, Director of Operations Expertise Contracting Co, Mohammad Mansoor, Chairman of Saara Group and President of OIC Bahrain, and Ismaeel, CEO of Realtech Industrial Services among others explained Mr Siddaramaiah the need to operate repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru and Bengaluru. 

They said among the thousands of stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia there are a large number of pregnant women, elderly people, patients who need immediate medical attention. 

They urged Siddaramaiah to exert pressure on the chief minister of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa and union ministers to arrange repatriation flights in the current schedule of Vande Bharat Mission itself. 

Siddaramaiah assured to take up the issue with the chief minister and other authorities concerned.

Gadag, Aug 1: A woman in Gadag district of Karnataka mortgaged her 'mangalsutra' to buy a television set for her children following the Karnataka government's decision to continue the classes through TV amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A resident of Radder Naganur village, Kasturi, who is also a mother of two, purchased a television set against her 'mangalsutra' for Rs 14,000. She bought the TV after her children's school teachers asked them to attend classes via the television set.

Kasturi said, "I can not send the children to the neighbours' house every day and it was necessary for them to study. We had no other option but to buy a TV set."

She said, "Both, my husband and I are daily wage workers and during coronavirus, we do not have work or money."

"I sold my 'mangalsutra' for Rs 20,000 and bought a TV for Rs 14,000," said Kasturi while happily adding, "Now, my kids can study at home itself."

Kasturi's daughter, Surekha said, "We did not have the TV for several months but now when we have it, we will study and get a bigger 'mangalsutra' for my mother."

Kasaragod, Apr 3: Kerala reported nine new cases of coronavirus on Friday, with seven from the worst affected Kasaragod district, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the coastal district alone mounted to 136.

Besides, Kasaragod, one case each was detected from Thrissur and Idukki, he told reporters after a COVID-19 review meeting this evening.

Currently, 251 people are under treatment for the virus in the state and 14 were cured today, Vijayan said.

A total of 1.69 lakh people are under surveillence in the state and 706 are in various hospitals.

Two fatalities have been reported from the state so far.
