Chikmagalur, March 14: Suspected Bajarang Dal activists on Monday stormed into two beef stalls located at Nehru Road in the city and brutally assaulted the staff and customers before setting them on fire.

Local sources said that at around 4:00 pm a group of miscreants, all of them believed to be Bajarang Dal activists, attacked the stalls.

A television footage showed miscreants punching a helpless man and dragging him out of the stall. He was then brought to the road and again rolled into a road-side drainage. He was brutally assaulted all the way and the attackers shouted abusive and provocative words at him.

When a team of police reached the spot and began to douse the flame, the clash had reached to its final stage and the suspected Bajrang Dal activists had knocked down at least four people to ground.

Justifying the attack, Raghu, the local leader of Bajarang Dal, said that his group was compelled to resort to violence after the owners of the 'illegal' beef stalls repeatedly neglected their warning.

Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar also visited the spot. Later speaking to media persons, he said six people have been taken into custody after the clash. However, he did not reveal the identities of the arrested.

He said fire was brought under control by the police within a few minutes.

Security has been strengthened in the city and all the necessary precautionary measures have been taken to prevent any possible backlash, said SP.
