Kasaragod, March 16: A leopard was trapped in a cage in Echikkanam near Kanhangad 25kms from here.

Several incidents of killings of domestic animals were reported for the last few weeks before the people alerted the forest officials. They brought a cage from Wayanad to trap the wily leopard which did not show up during day time.

The leopard was trapped in the cage set by forest officials as local people complained of the killings of their domestic animals. The leopard was trapped in the cage set in the house on one T V Shivaraman, a farmer by the forest officials following the killings of his goats by the leopard which frequently strayed into his house compound at night.

Due to frequent leopard menace in the village forest authorities setup a cage in Shivraman's house on March 10. On Tuesday at 3am, the residents of the house woke up by the sound of closure of the cage and also a goat's cry which was kept as bait. They informed the locals and neighbors after conforming that a leopard was caged. According to the forest authorities, the captured leopard is a seven year old male.

The village woke up with the news of the leopard trapped in the cage. Local people then streamed to the house of Sivaraman to see the leopard. The forest officials who were in the vicinity awaiting events rushed to the house.

A vehicle of the forest department trailed the wheeled cage on its way to Wayand to release it to the Wild Life Sanctuary.

Hassan, Feb 9: Accusing the Centre for treating Karnataka as its enemy Former Minister and Congress leader UT Khader on Saturday said that the state did not get support from the Centre on the Mahadayi issue and flood relief and even the Union Budget.

Speaking to the media here, he said that the state has elected 25 BJP Lok Sabha members. Three from the state were Ministers in the Union Cabinet and another MP has been appointed president of the party’s state unit.

'None of them have spoken about the injustice done to the state in the budget. The budget document announced Rs 18,600 crore for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. But, ultimately the amount earmarked for the project is only Rs 1 crore. How can any BJP leader justify this?', the Congress leader wondered.
