II PUC exams begin smoothly across DK

Mangalore, March 17: Like other parts of the state, the final examinations of II year Pre University course began in the Dakshina Kannada district, where 47 examination centres have been set up for over 29,000 students.

Students of Commerce and Science, faced Business Studies and Chemistry respectively as their first papers on Thursday. The examination centres seemed half filled on the first day as the students of Arts are still at home, getting ready for their first paper, Kannada, on Friday.

Although the Department of Public Instructions has not disclosed the total number of freshers and repeaters in this examination, a higher official has revealed that there are around 29,000 freshers in the district.

For the smooth conduct of the examination, which will conclude on March 30, district and taluk level committees have been set up, which will work towards preventing examination related malpractices and also ensure that the sanctity of the examination is upheld, according to Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, who is heading the district level committee.

The City Police Commissioner, Deputy Directors of departments of Women and Child Welfare, Fisheries, and PUC education and Deputy Secretary of Zilla Panchayat are the members of the district level committee.

The second district level team is headed by chief executive officer of ZP and consists of Superintended of Police, Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, District Social Welfare Officer, and Deputy Director, Department of Public Instructions.

The taluk level committees for Mangalore, Moodbidri and Bantwal taluks headed by Assistant Commissioner, Mangalore, comprise five members. Likewise, the taluk level committees for Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady comprise five officers and headed by the Assistant Commissioner, Puttur.

The heads of the committees would submit daily reports to the DC, who has directed them to ensure there are no examination malpractice.

All photocopying centres within the radius of 200 meters from the examination centres will remain closed during exam hours and the area is declared as prohibited by the DC.

Mangaluru: Youth dies in lift accident at wedding hall

Mangaluru, Mar 1: A youth lost his life in a lift crash at a wedding hall at Kallapu near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today.

The deceased has been identified as Hamzah (30), a resident near Thumbay, who was part of the catering team hired for the marriage ceremony.

The tragedy occurred at around 2 p.m. when Hamzah was getting ready to bring utensils and other things by lift from the third floor of the hall. All of a sudden, the lift’s ropes came loose and Hamzah lost his balance and got trapped inside.

He was pulled out and rushed to a hospital in Deralakatte, but he breathed his last on the way. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Udupi: Byndoor police station sealed for 2nd time after 3 staff test covid positive

Byndoor, Jul 16: Byndoor Police Station in Kundapur taluk of Udupi District, has been sealed for the second time in a month, after three personnel including an ASI were tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.

All the three including a lady Home Guard have been admitted to the designated Covid Hospital.

Last month the Station was sealed after staff had tested positive.

4 pistols found near Belagavi were used by Gauri Lankesh’s killers for training?

Belagavi, 12: Even though the investigation into the four abandoned country pistols that were recovered by the Karnataka police on the outskirts of Waghawade village in Belagavi taluk last weekend did not make any headway, the police are verifying if the weapons had been used by the assassin of Gauri Lankesh for training.

Four country pistols were found abandoned on the outskirts of Waghawade on Sunday. Locals informed that the police had taken the weapons for inspection.

Prima facie it appeared that the weapons were rusted and had not been used for long. Cases had been registered against unidentified persons and investigations were in progress.

After reports that the weapons could have been used for training by the assassin of Gauri Lankesh in the forests in Khanapur, a few kilometres away from the spot wherein they were found, police have been looking into this angle too.

Sources said the condition of the weapons indicated that they have not been used for decades but to allay doubt all aspects were being looked into.
