Udupi, Mar 17: Udupi police have arrested a Kerala based thief involved in over 26 house burgling cases and recovered gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 11 lakh.

The arrested has been identified as Tangaraju alias Ramesh (55), a native of Tamilnadu and settled in Kanzangad, Kerala.

During a recent burglary in Brahmavar, the forensic squad had been successful in identifying his finger prints, which matched with the one identified during a burglary in Bhatkal. Based on the finger print report Udupi DySP Jayanth Shetty and team has been successful in nabbing the culprit. During the interrogation Tangaraju confessed to have involved in over 26 cases – all in Karnataka, in the last eight years.

Udupi Superintendent of Police -in-charge- Venkteshappa told press persons that his modus operandi was very unique, as he used to identify his target for burglary in the evenings and end up on a house, gates and doors of which were locked for two days.

Newspapers of two - three days were still lying on the gate. After breaking open the doors and bringing out the jewels, he used to stay in a nearby no mans land, to avoid from the police on the night beat. He used to sell the stolen property to the local jewelers in the pretext that his son was serious in his native place and required money immediately for his treatment. He used to leave the city same night and come back on the next Friday to get ready for the next target.

Since four years Thangaraju was living in a lodge in Udupi, saying that he was a labour contractor of Suzlon Wind Power Equipment manufacturing company.
