Television tends to trivialise news: Vinod Mehta

Manipal, March 18: Editor-in-chief of Outlook Vinod Mehta has said that television tended to trivialise news.

He was speaking at a seminar on “Media conscience: changes, challenges and chances” organised here by Manipal Institute of Communication on Thursday.

Journalists should not be cynics. They could never be friends with politicians, the seasoned journalist said.

“A journalist is in the business of telling the truth. But a politician is giving a spin to the truth or embellishing it or evading it altogether. But if a journalist retains his professionalism, even the politician will treat you with respect,” he said.

Journalists should be ready to take calculated risks. They had to be prepared to offend people who were rich and powerful. “Sometimes, you may have to resign for taking on such people. But if you are a real good professional, you will get a job easily,” he said.

Mr. Mehta said that journalists were not infallible. They too committed mistakesBut if they made mistakes, they should be upfront and accept them, he added.

Udupi, Jul 16: With two deaths in a single day, and receiving coronavirus positive report of a person who died two days ago, Udupi district’s covid-19 death toll today mounted to eight. 

A-49-year-old resident of Udupi, was admitted to Ajjarkad government hospital for other ailments. He was suffering from multiple health issues like diabetes and respiratory problems.

Last night he was tested positive for coronavirus and hence he was shifted to Dr TMA Pai COVID hospital in Udupi where he breathed his last today. 

A 54-year-old man from Maravanthe in Byndoor taluk, who was suffering from asthma, today died while being taken from one hospital to the other.

He was admitted to a private hospital in Kundapur on the evening of Wednesday. Today he was being shifted to Manipal hospital. However he breathed his last half way through.  

His body was taken back to Kundapur and throat swab of the deceased was sent for testing. As the sample of the deceased person was taken using rapid test kit, his report was available within half an hour and it showed positive for covid-19. 

Meanwhile, throat swabs of a man from Ankola in Uttar Kannada district, who passed away in Manipal Hospital on July 14, were tested positive today. His funeral was held at the Beedinagudde crematorium as per the COVID norms.

Mangaluru, May 15: The second evacuation flight from Dubai to Mangaluru is expected to bring nearly 180 stranded UAE Kannadigas on May 18.

Air India Express B737-800NG aircraft will take off from terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport at 1.30 pm UAE time and land in Mangaluru International Airport at 6.30 pm local time, sources said.

Mangaluru Airport had witnessed chaos when the first repatriation flight arrived on May 12. Now many passengers of the first flight tested positive for the covid-19.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Muzrai Department of Karnataka on Tuesday issued a circular requesting all temples in the state to perform special puja on Wednesday following the 'bhoomi pujan' for Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The circular was issued on the directions of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Commissioner's Office, Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department Karnataka said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on August 5.

The construction of Ram temple will begin in Ayodhya after the foundation ceremony in which various dignitaries from political and religious fields are scheduled to participate.

The apex court, on November 9 last year, had directed the Central government to hand over the site at Ayodhya for the construction of a Ram temple.

The formation of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust was announced on February 5 for the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya. The Trust has been mandated by the Central government to oversee the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.
