Mangalore, March 19: The appeal by Mangalore City Corporation to adopt its 22 roads and five parks for three-year maintenance under “own your road and own your park'' scheme has found two takers.

A senior official of the corporation told The Hindu on Friday that the local unit of Prajapitha Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya has come forward to adopt the three-acre Mahatma Gandhi Park at Mannagudda and Durga Facilities Management Services has come forward to maintain the 700-metre tar road stretch between Karavali Circle and Mahaveera Circle. The corporation would soon enter into memoranda of understanding with them, the official said.

Karavali Circle-Mahaveera Circle Road is 14 metres in width and its median is one metre wide. The corporation has estimated its annual maintenance cost at Rs. 18.80 lakh.

It includes pavement patchworks and cleaning, kerb patchworks and painting, median patchworks and painting, streetlight replacing, marking zebra crossing, on street marking, maintaining traffic signboards, maintaining cat's eye and reflective tapes, carriageway patchwork, joint filling and cleaning, roadside tree plantation and watering and maintaining bus bays.

A booklet prepared by the corporation said the amount mentioned was only indicative cost. It estimated the annual maintenance cost of Mahatma Gandhi Park at Rs. 9.94 lakh.

Time sought

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Subodh Yadav convened a meeting here on Friday to discuss with representatives of banks and other establishments that were interested in adopting the roads and parks.

However, the representatives said they needed to discuss it with their higher ups. Most of the participants in the meeting were from banks.

Although Mr. Yadav offered them a chance to block the roads that they were interested in, the bankers said they need to discuss it with their higher ups since it involved financial aspects.

Mr. Yadav said the Government had been keen on implementing the scheme with effect from April. He said that every organisation had its corporate social responsibility.

The Deputy Commissioner said he had mooted the concept of adoption as sometimes the Government did not have enough funds to take up maintenance work immediately. Even if it had funds, long procedures involved did not allow implementing emergency works. Hence some works got delayed.

Mr. Yadav asked the bankers to get back to the corporation after discussing it with their higher ups.

Chamrajnagar, May 30: Karnataka Cabinet Minister Ramesh Jarakiholi said on Friday that over22 Congress MLAs were in touch with him and he can bring five of them.

"More than 22 Congress MLAs are in contact with me and if the high commands wants, I can bring five of them tomorrow," Jarakiholi told reporters.

Replying on speculation that some MLAs in BJP are not happy and want to join the Congress, he said, "Congress is a sinking boat and nobody wants to go to Congress now."

Meanwhile, sources in BJP have said that some party leaders are not happy including Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal.

Basvanagowda Patil said earlier this week that "BS Yediyurappa is not his CM, he is the CM of Karnataka. My leaders are Narendra Modi and JP Nadda."

The sources also said that other close aides of Yeddyurappa like Umesh Katti and Murugesh Nirani are no longer happy with him as they are yet to be included in the state cabinet.

The sources said Nirani has stood with Yeddyurappa but has not been included in the cabinet. There is speculation that several MLAs are in touch with Nirani.

Sources said Nirani, Umesh Katti, Basvanagowda Patil and several other leaders held a meeting in an undisclosed location.

Congress leader DK Suresh said the Congress has no role in the developments in BJP. "Yeddyurappa government will be brought down by their own MLAs. Congress has no role in it," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat on Monday held a protest march at Ramnagar district’s
Kapalabetta under the aegis of Hindu Jagran Vedike’s ‘Kanakapura Chalo’ campaign against the construction of the world’s largest Jesus statue there.

Hundreds of protesters of the Vedike staged a protest march in the city starting from the Kanakapura Ayyappaswamy temple.

“We are not here to disturb the peace. We have met each other at the wedding of Sriramulu’s daughter. So you know who I am, DK Shivakumar. How long will you continue with these lies? Is the intention behind the statue of Jesus to solidify your vote bank? Build the statue in America or England, we will not allow it here,” said the RSS leader as the keynote speaker at the rally.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.
