Mangalore celebrates Holi with vigor and joy

March 20, 2011

Mangalore, March 20: The colourful festival of Holi was celebrated across Mangalore on Sunday. People enjoyed the day spilling out onto the streets hurling coloured powder and coloured water at each other.

In a rare instance, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Subodh Yadav hosted a colourful holy bash at his residence here inviting his colleagues and senior police officers. City police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh, District police chief A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, District Home Commandant Nidarsh Hegde, Assistant Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma, Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalkatti along with their family members among others were seen in 'Holi' mood.

Heralding the coming of spring and marking the legend of triumph of good over evil, Holi this year in the city witnessed special enthusiasm among people of all categories alike.

Elders hugged, smeared gulal on each other's faces and exchanged traditional sweets. Shouting “Holi hai”, children, armed with water guns, did what they do best - played pranks by spraying coloured water and hurling water-filled balloons on passersby from the safety of rooftops and balconies of their houses.

Families played Holi coming out of their houses, splashing buckets of water on each other to whoops of joy, and screams from the unsuspecting victims as the cold water caught them unawares.

Police sources have said that no untoward incident has been reported in the city so far and the festival of colours was absolutely peaceful.
