Sparrows may get a new home at Pilikula Nisarghadhama

Mangalore, March 21: Dr. Shivarama Karantha Biological Park at Pilikula on the outskirts of the city is thinking of creating facilities for sparrow breeding, according to its director H.J. Bhandary.

Speaking to a national daily on “The World Sparrow Day” on Sunday with the theme “chirp for the sparrow! tweet for the sparrow!”, Mr. Bhandary said that change in the housing pattern was one of the reasons for sparrow population declining.

Earlier, house sparrows were easily breeding in thatched and tiled houses by building nests. Now concrete structures were replacing all such houses and other structures with tiles and thatched roofs taking away the nesting spots of sparrows.

Mr. Bhandary, who formerly served with the Forest Department as a Deputy Conservator of Forests, said that earlier people at tiled and thatched houses allowed them to continue to live with them. With the attitude of people changing in recent times, people did not allow them to build nests in concrete structures.

He said that he believed that change in agriculture pattern in the coastal belt with area under paddy shrinking and increased use of pesticides had affected their population.

He said that he did not agree that population of sparrows hadcompletely wiped out in the coastal belt. “I recently spotted some of them at Mannagudda in Mangalore and Hiriyadkka in Udupi district,” he said.

N.A. Madhyastha, member, Karnataka State Wildlife Board, said that electro magnetic radiation emanated from towers of mobile phones affected sparrows. Quoting a study, he said that about three crore sparrows had been estimated to have vanished in 10 years in London during 1990s. Their disappearance corresponded with the number of mobile phone towers erected during that period. He said that use of insecticides and change in the lifestyle of people who had moved to concrete structures had affected sparrows.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Yet another covid-19 positive case has been reported from Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. 

Health and Family Welfare Department's latest bulletin revealed that a 47-year-old woman from Panemangaluru in Bantwal was tested positive for the coronavirus. 

With this the total number of covid-19 infected people in Dakshina Kannada rose to 19 out of which 7 are from Bantwal taluk. 

According to sources, this woman was working as a sweeper in a private hospital in the city where a coronavirus victim from Bantwal was being treated before she was shifted to covid-19 hospital.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: All those who met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who has tested positive for Covid-19, in the last three-four days will have to be quarantined, Medical Education Minister Sudhakar K said on Monday.

He also said those who came in contact with Yediyurappa in a couple of programmes in the past week are being traced.

Sudhakar, a medical doctor himself, said Yediyurappa has "very mild cough and his chest is clear."

"I think eight to ten days," he told news agency when asked how long the Chief Minister would have to remain in hospital.

Sudhakar said he is also getting himself tested as a few of his office staff had tested positive.

"All those who met the Chief Minister in the last 3-4 days...ideally they should be quarantined till they receive their results/report. Those who came in contact with him in a couple of programmes will have to isolate themselves and subject themselves for testing," the Minister said.

On the Chief Minister meeting Governor Vajubhai Vala, along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai last Friday, Sudhakar said as a result "They also become primary contacts. Ideally, they should also be quarantined and tested."

Yediyurappa who was hospitalised on Sunday night after testing positive for Covid-19 was "doing well" and is "clinically stable", the hospital treating him said.

The 77-year old leader is being monitored by a team of doctors at the Manipal hospital here.

"He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team," the hospital said in a statement late last night.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," Yediyurappa had said in his tweet.

Yediyurappa was in home quarantine a couple of weeks ago, after some staff members in his home office were found infected with the virus. Subsequently, he tested negative for Covid-19.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: The Karnataka government on Tuesday launched the Janasevaka scheme in a few municipal corporation wards to ensure home delivery of various services like ration cards, senior citizen identity and health cards.

The scheme, which was launched by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, will pertain to 53 services involving 11 departments.

"Janasevaka under the Sakala scheme is a programme to avail the benefits of government schemes at the doorstep. Our objective is to make the lives of the citizens of Karnataka easy by launching this scheme," the Chief Minister said. Sakala aims to ensure in-time delivery of government services to citizens by practising innovative and efficient management systems through capacity building in government and empowering citizens to exercise their right to service.

Minister for Sakala and Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar said: "The scheme that was implemented in Dasarahalli area on a pilot basis will now be extended to Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli and Rajajinagar areas."

He added that it will benefit the senior citizens of the city.

If the scheme works well, it will be implemented across Bengaluru in all the 27 assembly segments, Kumar said, adding that based on the experiment in Bengaluru, it will be extended to Mysuru, Mangaluru and Hubballi-Dharwad.

Under the scheme, there will be one volunteer in each ward. These volunteers have been outsourced. A toll-free helpline has been set up for this scheme which will work from 8 am to 8 pm.

A sum of Rs 115 will be charged to provide the home delivery services.

In addition to it, the Karnataka government has also decided to seek information under the RTI Act easy by making it online.

People can apply from home by paying the fee online. This will make the process hassle-free, the Chief Minister said.
