Udupi, March 21: Students of Shanthiniketan English Medium School in Alevoor village, near here, witnessed the demonstration of Bidri Art or Bidriware, an unique art form of Bidar (North Karnataka) by Rashid Ahmed Qadri.

Qadri was one of the Bidri artisans who engaged in the Bidri craft live on the mounted truck that featured a tableau representing Karnataka at the Republic Day Parade held at New Delhi on Jan 26, this year.

Qadri was in Alevoor school as part of his campaign to popularize the Bidri art, which is considered extinguishing.

Making a Bidriware involves an alloy of zinc and copper as basic metal, upon which artistic designs in pure silver are inlaid. To make the silver inlay design stand out in a bright contrast against the dark background, a special soil is used.

“This particular type of soil is found only in the inner depths of Bidar Fort, which are three hundred years old, in buildings where neither sun light nor rain has fallen for hundreds of years. This soil when mixed with ammonium chloride and water produces a very special paste, which is rubbed on to the heated Bidri article, to darken the body without any effect on the silver,” he said adding “prior to choosing the soil we have even taste it, as it required to be saline''.

Qadri said that the government had created Bidri Colony, an exclusive settlement for the Bidri artisans on the outskirts of Bidar city. Government had also supplied metals with subsidized rates an even bought the finished Bidri wares to market them through Handicraft Emporium. It had even organized for training to the budding artisans. But since six months supply of subsidized metals and even the training programme had been stopped for the reasons unknown, he said.

On the occasion retired forest officer Raghuram Naik felicitated Qadri.

Principal of the School Roopa Kini, Treasurer of Alevoor Group for Education Hareesh Kini, entrepreneur Sainath Hegde, artist Ramesh Kediyoor, film maker Prakash Suvarna and members of faculty were also present.

Qadri also visited Hastha Shilpa Heritage Village Manipal and held discussions with its Director Vijayanath Shenoy. On the occasion Shenoy said about his association with Bidriware craftsmen and expressed his wish to have an exclusive Bidriware museum at the Heritage village.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: BJP leader and Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashok refused to comment on the Bellary car accident case, allegedly involving his son, saying that the matter was still under investigation and that they did not have anything to do with the said car.

The car crash took place on February 10, when a speeding red Mercedes Benz allegedly driven by Ashok's son rammed into a tea stall by the roadside killing two people. While a 16-year-old boy Ravi died on the spot, one of the car's passengers was also killed in the accident.

"I came to know about the incident and also heard that two people have died and a few others have sustained injuries. Everybody is equal under the law. It is not fair to comment as a minister when the case is being investigated," Ashok told reporters here on Thursday.

However, the minister avoided answering questions about his son's presence in the car and said that they had "no connection" with the car.

"The case is in the investigation stage, I don't want to comment on anything. My son's name is not present in the FIR. We have no connection with the car," he said.

Superintendent of Police CK Baba told reporters that Ashok's son was not present in the car.

"There was no senior BJP leader and Revenue Ministers's son in the car. We will not hide anything and the case will be investigated," Baba said.

Mangaluru, June 13:  The Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru City Police, which is digging up old cases involving underworld gangster Ravi Pujari, has now launched a fresh probe into the murder of human rights lawyer Naushad Kashimji.

Kashimji was gunned down on April 9, 2009 at the basement of his apartment in Falnir in Mangaluru. Ravi Pujari had allegedly ordered the hit.

As part of investigation, a team from Benglauru CCB has come to Mangaluru. CCB sleuths, who obtained Pujari’s police custody in connection with this case, are tying up the loose ends pertaining to the murder of Kashimji who was representing D-Company hitman Abdul Rashid Hassan Malbari aka Malbari.

Pujari was said to be unhappy over Kashimji representing Malbari. Pujari had also allegedly issued life threats, directing him to desist from doing so.

Kashimji had reportedly received more than 10 international threat calls from March 30 to April 9 (the day he was murdered). According to a senior police officer, the advocate had not informed the police or his then senior Purushottam Poojary about receiving the threat calls. “This came to light when police went through his call records later,” the officer explained.

“CCB team is primarily focusing on Pujari’s role in the advocate’s sensational murder,” a senior CCB officer handling the investigating said.

“We have also lined up other cases in which Pujari is allegedly involved, but had filed the chargesheet against him in absentia as he was then a fugitive,” the officer added. The team is now picking up threads of Pujari’s involvement cases in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts.

Pujari, currently in police custody in Bengaluru, is accused in more than 30 cases reported in Mangaluru from 2007 to 2018. Majority of the cases against Pujari pertain to extortion and extending death threats, one relating to murder, three to shootings/ abduction and one where he supplied money to his henchmen in prison. Police have filed ‘C’ report in 17 out of 28 threat call cases and ‘B’ report in one case. Rest are in different stages of trial.
