Fishmeal units face the heat as tsunami hits Japan

Mangalore, March 23: About half of the 10 manufacturers of fishmeal in and around Mangalore have suspended production owing to the changed demand scene in Japan following the earthquake-triggered tsunami. Of them, at least three exporters have sent fishmeal to Japanese ports with “no clear scene” on what has happened to what they have sent from here.

However, the suspension of production cannot be described as “closed” because fishmeal production is a seasonal activity, according to industry sources.

The tsunami has added another blow to the dull fishmeal industry already struggling with scarce and sporadic fish landing, rising prices and in recent times, a super moon-struck labour force migration that had abandoned the units to head home, they said.

The Japanese demand rises when the market here (September to January) is dull. “There is considerable exposure to Japan market, which is good and can fetch good prices for quality fishmeal. If the Japan demand is absent, units here have to suspend production,” the sources said.

A representative of a Mangalore-based company that has a turnover of Rs. 6 crore from Japan alone said that its business contacts in Japan told them that recovery could be expected in the second half of 2012. Since our fishmeal is used in aquaculture and as poultry feed and the feed companies are located in northern Japan, many must have been wiped out.

“There is no livestock, no farms, and no poultry. Infrastructure and ports have been damaged. For the time being, there are no exports,” he said.

“Mangalore's fishmeal industry has been affected by the tsunami, but the effect is yet to be felt. Units in Mangalore will find alternative uses but there is an impact. Other markets may not buy them,” said Mohammed Haris, secretary, Indian Fishmeal and Fish Oil Exporters' Association and partner of Mukka Seafood Industries, who had sent fishmeal to Japan three months ago. He said that 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes of fishmeal and 2,000 to 3,000 tonnes of fish oil per annum were exported to Japan.

Pramod Madhwaraj, proprietor of Raj Fishmeal and Oil Company, has sent 200 tonnes of fishmeal to other Japanese ports five days before the tsunami.

He said: “We have not yet felt the impact. We can't say much now as the vessel is still on its voyage”.

He had exported to Sendai two years ago but had no exports to that city now.

Fishmeal from Mangalore reaches Japan via Colombo in 20 to 25 days. It is used indirectly as the main ingredient in aquaculture and poultry feed as easily-digestible protein.

It has a shelf life of six months beyond which it turns lumpy and rancid.

Raw material availability depends on the forces of nature such as temperature, water current and wind direction. Unlike agriculture, where what is sown can be reaped, fishmeal depends on “the bounty of the sea”, said an industry expert.

The world's top three fishmeal consumers are China, U.S. and Japan. Japan buys 75 per cent of its requirements from Chile and 25 per cent from Asia, of which 15 per cent is from India.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Amid the relaxations in the coronavirus-induced lockdown, wedding planners are adapting to changing times and advancing themselves to provide best possible services to their clients.

Wedding planners come up with new trends. While women are matching their masks to their outfits, men who use turban for a wedding are wearing matching masks with the turbans. People are getting creative at the same time maintaining safety protocols. The live streaming of weddings for those who could not attend the wedding is also becoming a new normal.

Manisha Porwal Chouraria, a wedding planner at Color Palette Productions speaking to news agency said that Post COVID-19, weddings are performed as per the old cultures.

"Wedding Industry has impacted due to lockdown in the wake of COVID-19. Now, the concept of micro-wedding is trending in which you have guests who are close to you. Now, the old culture is back again as people who use to hold a wedding at lavish destinations are getting married in their lawns, farmhouses, terraces. Earlier, people used to get married in their 'Aangan' (Courtyard), people seem to be doing the same now. It is more personalised and expenses have come down, now. People are spending small amounts on decoration," said Chouraria.

"Following government guidelines, we are allowing 50 people at the wedding and not more than that. We are doing live streaming telecast and people can watch the wedding. We are also shipping gift boxes with a letter to 500 people who could not become part of the wedding. In the letter, we are writing that because of norms, you may not be invited but we want something to gift you on our wedding. People are planning to get married now and decide to throw a grand reception after 6 months in the hope that things will get better," she added.

Commenting upon how wedding planners are ensuring social distancing and how the fashion style changed due to pandemic, Chouraria said: "People are using matching masks. If women are wearing silk sarees, they are also wearing silk masks. Men are wearing matching masks with saafa (turban). The entire staff is asked to wear PPE kits. We are giving the guests a healthy kit comprising up of masks, sanitisers, gloves and tissues. We are doing thermal screening of the guests. We are also gifting cuddle curtains, a plastic transparent shield by using which you can touch feet of elders without physically touching them."

Mansi Porwal, Creative Head at Color Palette Productions said that it is becoming a challenging task for creative heads to plan wedding but still they are providing their best to the clients.

"Earlier people used to do theme wedding, big Indian Fat weddings. Now people are wedding with a small gathering. Now, family members are getting time to suggest the wedding planners about themes and the thing they want in their weddings. We are providing the best," she said.

"We have come up with a new theme, 'Har Din Subh hai' which means every day is auspicious. Post COVID-19 people are looking for available dates for the wedding. Now, every day becomes auspicious. This is going to be the new trend," she added.

Another wedding planner, Abhilash of Taarini Weddings said that their company is providing customised masks to guests.

"Earlier we have lots of weddings to cover across the globe. But now, we have less numbers of weddings. Budgets are reduced now. We are happy to start again. We are creating e-invites in which we are sending the guidelines to the guests. We also have a help desk to assist the clients and guests. We are providing the matching masks to the groom and we are also giving customized masks to guests too," he said.

Earlier, Karnataka's Department of Health and Family Welfare Services had issued an advisory for marriages, stating that not more than 50 guests shall be allowed and the consumption of liquor on the occasion will be prohibited.

As per the advisory, anyone found having fever, cold, cough, difficulty in breathing shall not be permitted to attend the event and immediately referred to seek medical advice.

"All persons shall wear face mask compulsorily. All persons shall maintain a physical distance of more than one metre. Hand wash with soap and water shall be provided in washrooms," adds the advisory.

Udupi, Feb 10: The throat swabs of three suspected coronavirus patients in Udupi that was sent for tests have come back as negative.

Throat swabs of three persons who got admitted at a district government hospital in Udupi with symptoms of fever on Friday was sent to Bangalore medical college and research institute for test to know whether the admitted persons who returned from China 15 days back had contracted coronavirus.

The 30-year-old man from Kaup taluk had been China on personal work and had returned to Udupi 15 days back. Upon showing the symptoms of fever, throat pain and cold, he was suggested to get admitted.

He was admitted in the isolation ward and was directed to remain under quarantine till the observation period ends and till the test report is obtained.

Another family from Mandarthi, a man and his wife, who had returned after a tour from China 15 days back were also kept under observation at the isolation ward in the district government hospital, Udupi.

Udupi DC G Jagadish has said that there are no coronavirus case reported in Udupi and people need not panic. Sources said that the three tested negatives for coronavirus in Udupi will be discharged from the hospital on Monday.

Hubballi, Jan 15: Leaders of the Muslim community, Dalit organisations, Congress Party, and others are staging a hunger strike at Dr B R Ambedkar Circle in Hubballi, opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, they demanded the withdrawal of the CAA and not to implement NRC.

"India is witnessing such a dictatorship for the first time. The BJP government is trying to divide people into the lines of religion, through CAA and NRC. This move is a threat for peace and harmony in the country," said AICC member Shakir Sanadi, who led the protest.

Sayed Tajuddin Quadri, Moulana Niyaz Alam, Moulana Nayimuddin and others took part in the hunger strike.

Former minister A M Hindasgeri, former MP I G Sanadi, F H Jakkappanavar, Pitambrappa Bilar, and others also extended support to the protest.
