Justice M F Saldanha presents report on atrocities against Christians to PM

March 23, 2011
Mangalore, March 23: “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given special assurance to the citizens of the state that the central government will ensure the welfare and security of all citizens particularly thise belonging to the minorities and the weaker sections of coastal Karnataka”, said Justice Micheal F Saldanha, Retired Judge of Karnataka High Court.

He was speaking to media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Wednesday, March 23, briefing about his visit to New Delhi where he presented the People's Enquiry Tribunal Report on the atrocities committed against minorities personally to the Prime Minister and others such as Vice President of India Hamid Ansari, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, and Union Minister for Minorities Salman Khurshid.

Justice Saldanha said that Hamid Ansari expressed deep regret over the use of violence against the minorities and particularly their places of worship and that it will be effectively curtailed.

Of his meeting with P Chidambaram, Justice Saldanha said that the Union Home Minister was concerned about the security in the coastal region and that it needs to be stepped up both externally as well as internally so that the life of people living in the region improves. He has even assured that if required, Central forces would be deployed to safeguard the interests of the minorities, as was done in Mysore, Saldanha said.

Veerappa Moily, Saldanha said, was severe on the subordinate judiciary of the region which has failed to protect the rights of the victims of human rights atrocities. Moily stated that the state government was handin glove with the communal elements who resorted to violence against the minorities, Saldanha said.

Calling Salman Khurshid as a 'well informed' man who was even aware of atrocities that took place in Ullal, Saldanha said that the Minister came out strongly against communal violence perpetrated by police, state administration and communal elements. He stated that his Ministry will go all out to enforce the Constituional guarantees and combat human rights infringements.

S M Krishna termed what happened in Karnataka as something 'intolerable' and the union government would take measures to combat these illegalities, Saldanha said.

Breifing about his meeting with Governor of Karnataka H R Bharadwaj, Justice Saldanha said that the constitutional authority appreciated the report prepared by him. The Governor feels that arrests of Christians are not justified and that trauma has been caused to the Christian community. He has said that cases against the minorities must be withdrawn and also informed that the 338 false cases instituted against the victims would be withdrawn within one month and a direction to this effect has been issued to the state government. Home Minister R Ashok has confirmd that the withdrawal would be done within the next few days. The Governor also assured that he would recommend the Memorandum for appropriate corrective action, Saldanha said.

Mangaluru, May 4: No major crowds were seen in the coastal city of Mangaluru today except in front of the liquor shops after the district administration relaxed the lockdown norms for 12 hours a day (between 7am and 7pm).

There was no mad rush of vehicles either on city roads when the relaxed lockdown began. There were fewer people to buy essentials in front of grocery and vegetable shops as they had time till late evening.

There was no let down in the number of police pickets as well as curbs on vehicular movement across the city either.

The government has allowed sale of liquor in CL2 (standalone wine shops) and CL 11 (MSIL outlets) to mop up revenues when Lockdown-3 commenced from Monday. Compared the other parts of Karnataka, the size of queues in front of liquor shops in Mangaluru were smaller.

Like other parts of the country, the lockdown was imposed in the coastal district on March 24 to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Prior to that, a curfew was imposed in the district from March 22 midnight. The lockdown did not apply to essential services such as sale of food, groceries, milk, vegetables, fruits, and meat and fish. Gradually the district administration had to intensify the lockdown and allow those shops to remain open only between 7 a.m. and 12 noon.

With the lockdown relaxation extending till 7 p.m., Mangaluru today witnessed people and private vehicles moving freely in the afternoon for the first time in more than a month. However, only those who had to go for work and do other essential activities were seen on roads. After 7 p.m. movements of all kinds of vehicles will be prohibited.

The relaxation was to facilitate economic activities that had come to a standstill during the first two phases of lockdown. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha, meanwhile, warned the people against misusing lockdown relaxation and venturing out without any genuine reason.

Mangaluru/Mysuru, May 19: Though the Karnataka government permitted the private buses, operators in Dakshina Kannada district have decided not to operate buses until May end. In Mysuru district too the private buses remained off the roads.

Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners’ Association President Dilraj Alva said “Technically, private bus operators are not able to operate services as all of us have surrendered our permits. If we start services we will have to pay the tax for entire month. Hence, we have decided to resume bus services from June 1.”

The private buses had suspended their services since March 24.

In addition, bus owners also have two more demands which the state government needs to consider on priority, he said.

“We have requested the government to exempt private buses from paying tax for the next six months. We were not plying buses during lockdown and it will be tough for us in the next three months to operate as per new conditions.”

“The government has allowed only 30 persons in each bus to maintain social distancing. In addition, we have been urging the state government for bus fare revision since 2013. The government has revised the bus fares of KSRTC twice after that,” Alva said adding that bus owners will be meeting Mangaluru RTO on Tuesday.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Senior Congress leader K J George on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate officials here in connection with a FEMA case.

The former minister is being investigated by the ED for probable violation of provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

The ED had recently issued summons to George.

Speaking to reporters after appearing before the ED, George said he has answered to the officials' queries and will cooperate further also.

"ED had issued me summons, as a law abiding citizen, I have answered and gave documents to whatever they asked.

Further also if they call me...I will cooperate and provide necessary documents," he said, without divulging any details.

George clarified that no summons has been issued by the ED to members of his family.

"If required they (ED officials) will call me again, and I'm ready to cooperate," the congress leader added.

Last year, the president of the Karnataka Rashtra Samithi Ravi Krishna Reddy had complained to the ED seeking a probe into the alleged money laundering and properties held by George and his family members in the United States.

Responding to a question about a defamation case filed by him against those who have levelled the allegations, George said "Just because ED has called me for questioning, I'm not proved guilty."

"Anyone can complain to agencies like the Income Tax or ED or Lokayukta, but my only objection is with going to the press to project someone as guilty," he said.

"...going to the press with an intention to do a propaganda against me..someone who is in public life-- to project me as guilty is wrong, so I have filed defamation case stating the allegations are false," he added.

George is the third senior Congress leader from Karnataka to face an ED probe after D K Shivakumar and B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan.

Shivakumar was arrested by the agency in a money laundering case and was kept in Tihar Jail, until he got bail in October, while Khan was summoned in connection with the multi-crore IMA group Ponzi scam case.
